How to Grow and Care for Dipladenia: Planting Methods and Precautions
Dipladenia is a new type of ornamental plant grown mainly for its flowers. It is named “dipladenia” (literally “drifting fragrance vine”) because it releases waves of delicate, refreshing fragrance when it blooms. Its flowers attract most people's attention as soon as they open, and it is deeply loved by everyone. Friends who want to learn how to grow this plant may wish to refer to the experience below.
How to Grow Dipladenia
1. Light and temperature
It prefers a warm environment with plenty of light and is not cold-tolerant. The optimum growing temperature is 20°C-30°C, and growth is inhibited when the outdoor temperature falls below 7.5°C. In the Beijing area, it must be kept indoors to protect it from the cold over winter; it may lose its leaves during overwintering and will not bloom again until spring.
2. Water and humidity
Soil that is too dry affects fertilizer uptake, while soil that is too wet causes root death or other diseases. Especially in winter, watering should be reduced to keep the soil dry. In summer, increase watering and avoid letting the soil dry out completely. When grown outdoors, it should not be planted in overly low-lying spots, so that waterlogging does not cause oxygen deficiency and poor growth. The optimum relative air humidity is 70-80%, and it should be kept below 50%.
3. Growing medium
It adapts well to different soils. The potting soil must drain well, and a medium with added amendments and humus is best. For indoor pot cultivation in the north, leaf mold plus a small amount of coarse sand can be used; in the south, pond mud, peat soil and river sand can be mixed in a 5:3:2 ratio.
4. Fertilizing
During the vigorous growing period in spring and summer, fertilizer must be applied appropriately. A balanced slow-release fertilizer can be applied to the potting soil, followed by a liquid fertilizer once every 7-10 days. Generally, a compound fertilizer with a balanced ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium is applied in spring. In late spring or early summer, a fertilizer with a higher phosphorus content can be added to encourage blooming. When potting up, it is also fine to add some slow-release fertilizer. If scorch symptoms appear at the leaf tips, or black spots appear on the top and sides of the leaves, the plant may be lacking nutrients.
Dipladenia Planting Methods and Precautions
1. Light requirements: Dipladenia likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight. Sufficient light is needed to ensure normal growth, and either partial sun or full sun is fine. Of course, dipladenia can also be kept in a slightly shaded spot.
2. Water and fertilizer management: Water and fertilizer management must be done well during the care of dipladenia. As for watering, watering should be controlled; do not let the plant become waterlogged or too dry, which would cause poor growth. Good water and fertilizer management helps form a well-developed root system, and only then will dipladenia grow vigorously. During the growing period, a compound fertilizer can be applied as a top dressing 3-5 times.
3. Temperature requirements: The best temperature for dipladenia growth is between 20-30°C, and it is best not to exceed 35°C. In winter, when the temperature is too low, it is prone to cold damage, so keep the temperature up in winter, preferably no lower than 10°C.
4. Soil selection: Dipladenia is not demanding about soil and has strong adaptability, but a sandy loam rich in humus and with good drainage is best.
5. Pruning: Dipladenia is generally pruned at two times: after the flowering period and in spring. Pruning after the flowering period can shape the dipladenia and make it more attractive. Pruning old plants in spring can encourage new shoots to sprout.
2. Precautions
1. Light must be sufficient; insufficient light will reduce blooming in dipladenia.
2. When fertilizing, the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied should be controlled, so that the dipladenia plants do not grow too vigorously because of excessive nutrients, which would affect blooming and reduce the number of flowers.
3. Although dipladenia has strong stress resistance and is rarely infected by diseases, preventive measures should still be taken.
How to Propagate Dipladenia by Cuttings
1. Timing
This operation is generally carried out in late spring and early summer.
2. Cuttings
Generally, semi-lignified branches grown in the current year are selected, about 20 cm long. They should immediately be placed in a bag with suitable humidity for later use; of course, it is best to wrap the cut end with damp toilet paper or cloth.
3. Cleaning
The container used for cuttings should be washed to remove any residual substances inside, and then rinsed clean.
4. Medium
There are still requirements for the medium; generally a fairly airy one is chosen, such as perlite and peat. Then it should be sprayed moist, with moderate humidity; it does not need to be especially wet. Generally, if it can be squeezed into a ball that does not fall apart, that is good; if water comes out when squeezed, that is still not acceptable.
5. Inserting the cuttings
Once the preliminary preparations are done, the specific operation is to take the branches out of the plastic bag, cut off the lower leaves, and then dip the base in some rooting powder; of course, this must be done according to its instructions for use. After that, insert the branches into the medium. One thing to note is that the leaves must not touch its edge.
6. Bagging
Cover it with a bag and place it at a temperature of about 20, in a spot with diffused light. Open the bag once or twice a day and check the moisture content inside; if it is short of water, try spraying some water on it.
7. Rooting
Roots generally grow in about two weeks. If it is to be transplanted, this should wait until the roots are about 8 cm long.
When Does Dipladenia Bloom
The flowering period of dipladenia is actually quite long, mainly concentrated in summer and autumn. From flowering in April to the flowers falling in October, dipladenia can last nearly half a year. It can be said to be very long-lasting.
Many flower lovers know that plants in the Apocynaceae family are toxic, and dipladenia also belongs to the Apocynaceae, so quite a few flower lovers worry about whether it is toxic and dare not grow it. However, at present there is no clear information showing that dipladenia is toxic, so everyone need not worry too much and can grow it with peace of mind.
