Star jasmine is surely no stranger to many people; we often see it in daily life. It has extremely high ornamental value, so it is deeply loved by consumers. The main ornamental feature of star jasmine is its flowers, which are commonly white. Nowadays many people grow star jasmine as potted plants, but there are also some techniques to follow when cultivating it.

How to Grow Star Jasmine (Bonsai)

1. Star jasmine likes a warm, semi-shaded growing environment. It can tolerate cold and intense heat, but it fears severe cold. It likes weak light, but it can tolerate blazing sun. When growing star jasmine, you can place it in a sunny spot to ensure sufficient light.

2. In spring, autumn and winter, star jasmine can be placed in a spot with plenty of sunlight; in summer, it needs shading or should be moved to a semi-shaded spot during strong sunlight. Star jasmine is cold-tolerant, but its cold tolerance is not strong; when the temperature is too low, it can be placed in a warm indoor spot to overwinter.

Star Jasmine Cultivation Methods and Precautions

1. Cultivation methods:

1. Potting soil selection. Star jasmine can be grown in pots or in the ground. Potted star jasmine can be shaped according to the grower's own preferences. Star jasmine has strong adaptability to soil; the potting soil can be slightly acidic or neutral, and weakly alkaline soil can also be used, though growth will be poorer. Generally, garden soil is sufficient, and some leaf mold can be added.

2. Watering. During the growing season, the potting soil of star jasmine needs to stay moist. In spring and autumn, water once every two days; in summer, water once a day, and in summer it can be watered every day; in winter, water less, once every half month is enough. Pay attention during the rainy season and ensure drainage to avoid waterlogging.

3. Fertilizing. Star jasmine likes fertilizer, but it can also tolerate poor soil; with little fertilizer it can still bloom, but there will be adverse effects. To make star jasmine bloom more, you can apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Normally, apply a compound fertilizer once in spring and once in autumn; in winter and summer, no fertilizer is needed.

2. Precautions:

Star jasmine vines can be controlled by pruning to promote branching, which helps produce a full plant shape. The first pruning is done when the vine reaches 8 cm, cutting it back to leave about 6 cm; afterward, prune every 4-5 cm of growth. Usually 2-3 prunings are enough to achieve a good bonsai shape.

What to Do If Star Jasmine Drops Its Leaves

1. Leaf drop in star jasmine is basically caused by lack of water or poor ventilation.

2. During the growing period, star jasmine has a very high demand for water, so it should be watered and misted frequently to increase humidity. If watering is insufficient, it will not only fail to meet the growth needs of star jasmine, but will also cause leaf drop.

3. Poor ventilation can make it difficult for the plant to breathe, causing root rot, leaf drop, and other problems such as pest breeding. Pests can also cause leaf drop.

4. Generally, we only need to control moisture, water reasonably, ensure sufficient water, but avoid waterlogging caused by watering, which can lead to rot. During normal care, pay attention to more ventilation to ensure air circulation, which can also reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

How to Handle Wilted Branches of Star Jasmine

1. Although wilt disease occurs frequently, it is generally not fatal. If only one or two branches wilt, the method is to prune the wilted branches from the blackened point; this will not affect the other healthy branches. If the whole plant wilts, after pruning everything and keeping only the root system, it may still send out new branches in autumn.

2. The wilted branches actually do not have to be discarded. If discovered in time, cut off the tender top shoots with flower buds and keep the semi-lignified part of the branches; after placing them in water for a while, the leaves will perk up, and they can be used for cuttings.

When growing star jasmine, you must pay attention to the control of light and temperature, and you also need to choose suitable potting soil. In the later stages of cultivation, you also need to strengthen the management of fertilizer and water. Only by doing these well can you ensure the growth of star jasmine and avoid leaf drop and withered branches.
