Speaking of water lilies, most people are probably fairly familiar with them, because we often see them in daily life. The flowers of the water lily are very beautiful in shape, and its leaves are emerald green and glossy, with a striking color combination, making it a very precious aquatic flowering plant. So do you know how water lily seeds open and sprout? If you don't know, come and learn about it with the editor!

How to open water lily seeds

The seed coat of lotus seeds is very thick, so for smoother germination, simple treatment is needed. First, please distinguish the two ends of the bowl lotus seed: one end has a small protrusion, and the other end has a small indentation. The end to treat is the indented one.

1. Rub off the seed coat on a cement floor.

2. Crack it open with pliers.

3. Cut off a small piece of the seed coat with a sharp small knife.

4. You can also first drill a small hole in the indentation with an awl, soak it in water for a while, and then cut off a small piece of the seed coat with scissors! Be careful not to drill too deep, and do not drill into the kernel inside! The choice is to cut with a sharp small knife; a utility knife can be used. Cut off about 1mm~2mm.

How to care for water lilies after they sprout

1. You can buy some pond silt online (the pond near my home has industrial pollution, so I did not dare dig it directly);

2. Before putting the purchased pond silt into a container, soak it in clean water for 1~2 hours, and remove the dirty things (generally small things like leaves or weeds);

3. Spread the pond silt evenly on the bottom of the container, press the sprouted water lily seeds (do not remove the black shell) one by one into the silt, spread a layer of washed fine sand on top of the pond silt (to prevent the silt from floating up and making the water muddy after pouring), pour in settled clean water, and then add a few drops of hydroponic nutrient solution to supplement nutrients.

What to do if water lily leaves turn black

If the leaves of the water lily turn black, measures need to be taken to reduce the harm, and you can start from the causes of the blackening of water lily leaves.

If there is too much water and fertilizer when growing water lilies, you can change the water immediately. When changing the water, note that you should first change half of it and keep the water temperature similar. If too much base fertilizer was applied when planting, you need to repot and replace the soil.

During the growth period of the water lily, if it is infected by pathogens and leaf disease occurs, you need to cut off the blackened leaves and then spray with carbendazim solution.

In addition, sunlight needs to be increased. If the water for the water lily becomes dirty, replace it with clean water. When changing the water, pay attention to the water temperature to avoid changes in the pH of the water.

Water lily cutting propagation method

1. Cutting propagation time

A small number of water lily varieties can be propagated by cuttings from adventitious buds on the leaves, and this can be done in both spring and autumn.

2. Selection of cuttings

When selecting adventitious buds for cutting propagation, choose mature, strong leaves, place the leaves upside down, and separate them from the mother plant. The petiole should touch the water surface, and after the adventitious buds grow larger from the center of the petiole, take them off.

3. Cutting cultivation method

Fill a flowerpot with field soil or clay soil, water it thoroughly, apply a small amount of organic fertilizer, or add a small amount of American sand, and then insert the cuttings.

You can also place the cuttings in a basin with mud and water, press the leaves upside down into the water, press mud around them, keep the adventitious buds facing upward, and keep the leaves submerged in water.

Water lilies like strong light very much, so cultivate them in a place where they can get half a day of sunlight or more. Apply organic fertilizer once every year, and after two or three years you can trim the roots and change the soil.

As mentioned above, some flower lovers buy some seeds to grow at home in order to often enjoy the beauty of water lilies. In fact, the cultivation method of water lilies is relatively simple, but you must master the correct care techniques, and you also need to manage them more often in daily life!
