Grape hyacinth is a highly ornamental plant. Its appearance is quite similar to that of the common hyacinth, and its flowers are most commonly blue, arranged in a clustered form, looking just like little grapes one after another, which is how it got its name. Nowadays many people grow grape hyacinths, but before growing them, you still need to master some techniques.

How to Grow Grape Hyacinth

1. Light: Grape hyacinth only needs more than 5000Lx to maintain normal physiological activity. If the light is too weak, the plant will become spindly, the stems too long, the buds small, the flowers will fade early, and the leaves will turn yellow. You can use an incandescent lamp about 1 m away to supplement light; but too strong light can also cause leaf and petal scorching or shorten the flowering period.

2. Humidity: Soil humidity should be kept between 60-70%. If too high, root respiration is inhibited and the roots rot easily; if too low, the above-ground parts wilt and may even die. Air humidity should be kept at around 80%, and humidity can be increased by misting or sprinkling water on the ground, or reduced by ventilation and air exchange.

Grape Hyacinth Cultivation Methods and Precautions

I. Cultivation methods:

1. Grape hyacinth is generally cultivated in the autumn and winter of each year. The soil we use for growing grape hyacinth is best chosen to be relatively fertile and well-draining; leaf mold and sandy loam are both very good soils for planting grape hyacinth.

2. After planting the grape hyacinth bulbs, water them thoroughly immediately, then place them in a sunny spot for cultivation. During this period, water frequently to keep the soil moist.

3. Once the inflorescence grows out, we should place the grape hyacinth in a semi-shaded spot for growing, so that the inflorescence can grow rapidly. The environment for growing grape hyacinth is best kept between 15°C—20°C, which is beneficial for plant growth.

II. Precautions:

When planting grape hyacinth bulbs, be careful to leave the tip of the bulb exposed. When we plant the bulbs in moist soil, water immediately, then water sparingly or not at all, but be careful not to let the soil dry out.

What to Do If Grape Hyacinth Roots Rot

1. The roots of grape hyacinth are different from those of other plants; the root system grows on the bulb. If only the roots have rotted, there is no big problem. Simply clean away the rotted roots, then disinfect with potassium permanganate solution, dry in a cool place, and replant in soil. Do not continue with water culture; the chance of saving it this way is still quite high.

2. If the bulb has also rotted, be sure to wash the moldy areas clean, peel off the rotted parts, carefully check whether there are rot marks around the bulb, then disinfect, dry, and replant.

Common Diseases of Grape Hyacinth and Their Control

1. Yellow rot: Control method: Choose robust, sterile bulbs when planting. Before planting, disinfect the bulbs and soil with formalin solution. If growing in water, use uncontaminated clean water. When disease occurs, spray with carbendazim solution once every 2~3 days; symptoms ease after 3~5 sprays.

2. Sclerotinia rot. Control method: Choose robust, sterile bulbs when planting. Disinfect the potting soil with quintozene by sprinkling it directly into the soil and mixing evenly before planting. Remove diseased plants promptly when found, and clear away diseased leaves in time.

3. Gray mold. Control method: Reduce sources of infection: remove diseased leaves promptly when found. Chemical control: spray Bordeaux mixture, mixed at a ratio of 1:1000, spraying 2~3 times with an interval of 1~2 days.

4. Root nodule disease. Control method: During the storage period of the bulbs, strictly disinfect and sterilize, and make sure the storage environment is well ventilated with suitable temperature. Check once a week for any abnormalities, and burn diseased plants promptly when found. Before planting, the soil must be disinfected. Take careful care, and promptly remove dead branches and fallen leaves on the soil surface. During care, do not frequently turn over the roots, so as to avoid damaging the root system and increasing the probability of disease.

When growing grape hyacinth, you must manage light and temperature well, and you also need to strengthen control of water and fertilizer; too much or too little is bad. If root rot occurs while growing grape hyacinth, do not panic; first find the cause, then completely solve the problem at its root.
