Hydrangea, also called xiuqiu, is a plant with high ornamental value. Its main ornamental feature is its flowers, which cluster into balls and are commonly seen in yellow, blue, purple, red, and so on, thus attracting many people to grow it. However, during cultivation, many people encounter phenomena such as yellowing leaves, so how should this be solved?

What to Do When Hydrangea Leaves Turn Yellow

1. Water with ferrous sulfate solution or potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution once every 10~20 days to ensure the soil is acidic. Or directly water with a 150~250 times diluted edible rice vinegar solution, and it will take effect after 3~4 times. When planting or when repotting and changing soil, add sulfur powder to the soil to ensure the soil is acidic, and its effective period can last 2~3 years. In spring and autumn, when the branches and leaves are lush, apply alum fertilizer water once every 15 days, which can prevent the occurrence of chlorosis in the plant and make the leaves bright and dark green.

2. If there is too little light, appropriately increase the lighting time, and it will gradually recover. If the light is too strong, immediately move the plant to a shady, light-blocked place to avoid direct sunlight. At the same time, frequently spray water on the leaves and the surrounding environment to increase air humidity, and gradually the leaves will recover their green color.

3. For watering, insist on watering only after the soil has dried completely. When overwatered, stop watering, loosen the soil, and let it dry. If underwatered and the soil surface is too dry, you can first water a small amount, then after half an hour water thoroughly, and at the same time spray clean water on the branches and leaves.

4. When too much fertilizer has been applied, immediately stop fertilizing and water a small amount. Or directly take the plant out of the pot, rinse the plant with clean water, change the soil, and replant. If yellowing leaves are caused by too little fertilizer, change the soil and fertilize in time, watering with a thin liquid fertilizer about once every 10 days, and the leaves will gradually turn green.

How to Prune Hydrangea Branches and Leaves for a Better Look

1. Pinching. After the two batches of seedlings survive and grow to about 10~15 cm, pinching should be done, cutting off the very top of the branches so that the axillary buds below the plant can sprout. Then choose the 4 new branches on the upper part and remove all the axillary buds below. When the new plant grows again to 8~10 cm, repeat the above actions.

2. Pruning old branches. One-year-old plants bloom less, and usually two-year-old strong branches bloom more. To ensure continued blooming next year, prune in time after flowering. After flowering, cut the old branches short, keeping 2~3 buds, to prevent the plant from growing too tall. After autumn, cut off the tops of the plant's new shoots to stop the branches from growing and let them enter the dormant period. Try it. With such a simple cut, the shape is beautiful, the ornamental value is greatly enhanced, and the plant will grow more vigorously.

How to Repot Hydrangea

1. Potted hydrangeas usually need to be repotted and have their soil changed once a year, in early March. For the new soil, use leaf mold, garden soil, and sand mixed in a 4:4:2 ratio, and add a small amount of cake fertilizer.

2. When taking the plant out of the pot, prune the plant's root system. Take the plant out of the pot, shake off the soil around the roots, and cut off rotten roots, decayed roots, and overly long root hairs. Put it into the new soil, firm the soil, water thoroughly, then place it in a shady place for 10 days, after which move it outdoors for normal care.

How to Fertilize Hydrangea

1. When fertilizing hydrangea, organic fertilizer is generally the main type, and some compound fertilizer can also be used. During the growth period of hydrangea, apply decomposed thin fertilizer water once every half month. During this period, fertilization is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, such as soybean cake, compound fertilizer, or human and livestock manure, all of which can be used.

2. To enable hydrangea to grow healthily, sometimes it is also necessary to apply some foliar fertilizer to it, and spraying some urea or ferrous sulfate solution is sufficient.

3. When the flowering period of hydrangea arrives, in order to make it produce more beautiful flowers, during the flower bud differentiation stage and the flower bud formation stage, more phosphorus fertilizer and potassium fertilizer can be applied, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate can also be sprayed on the leaves. When the flowers are about to open, fertilization needs to be stopped.

The causes of yellowing hydrangea leaves are generally light, water, fertilizer, soil, and so on, so the cause should be found from the root and then thoroughly solved. If hydrangea is to grow well, it must be pruned at the right time. The pruning methods have been introduced in detail above, and I hope they can be helpful to everyone.
