Aspidistra (cast iron plant) is a very attractive foliage plant. Its leaves stay green all year round, its form is elegant, upright and neat, and even in the cold of winter it can give you a feeling of full spring vitality. It is very suitable as a home decorative plant. So, is Aspidistra easy to grow? How should Aspidistra be cultivated? Many flower lovers surely have such questions, so let me answer them one by one below!

How to grow Aspidistra

1. Soil

It has no great demands on soil and can tolerate poor land. Ideally it should be sufficiently loose, sufficiently fertile sandy soil with slight acidity. When making it into a potted plant, you can mix rotten leaves, peat and ordinary garden soil as the base soil for it.

2. Water

During its growing season it needs plenty of water, and the soil in the pot must be kept sufficiently moist at all times. You can frequently sprinkle water on its leaves to increase humidity, which helps its buds grow into new leaves. After autumn arrives, watering can be moderately reduced.

3. Light

It can grow vigorously in places without sun, but it needs to be sufficiently bright. You can use a shade to block the sunlight for it. In the high-temperature weather of summer and autumn, do not let it receive direct sunlight, otherwise yellow spots will appear on its leaves, and these cannot disappear. In that case, its growth rate will slow down and it will become less attractive.

4. Temperature

It likes warm areas and does not like cold. It is best to place it in an environment of 15-25°C. If it is winter, do not let it be below 5°C.

5. Fertilizing

Before planting it out, you can use rotten leaves as base fertilizer, using 2 kg of rotten leaves per sq m, spread them evenly in the soil, then loosen the soil. In seasons other than winter, it grows relatively vigorously, so give it diluted fertilizer water once a week. If it is deep winter, stop adding fertilizer.

Aspidistra cultivation methods and key points to note

1. Aspidistra is not strict about soil and is fairly tolerant of poor soil, but it is best to choose loose, fertile, slightly acidic soil. For home potting, you can choose a mix of leaf mold, peat soil and garden soil.

2. Water thoroughly

Aspidistra has low soil requirements, but its water requirements are relatively high. You need to keep the potting soil moist and frequently spray the leaf surface to retain moisture and promote the sprouting of new leaves. However, after the beginning of autumn, appropriately reduce watering, and in winter keep the potting soil dry.

3. It does not mind light

Aspidistra is a shade-loving plant, and it can be said that it can grow very well without light. You can place it in a bright room for care, but it absolutely must not be placed in direct sunlight; even a short period of exposure will scorch the leaves and reduce its ornamental value. However, the care environment also must not be too dark, such as a storage room or a dark little room; such an environment is not good for the sprouting of new leaves. It is best to move it every so often to a place with bright light, which is good for growth and appearance.

4. Key points to note

For Aspidistra grown indoors, appropriately raise the indoor temperature, especially at night. Open the windows in time during the day to ventilate and reduce indoor humidity, so as to avoid the environment being too damp and causing pests and diseases.

When does Aspidistra bloom

Aspidistra blooms between March and April (under natural conditions). However, if grown at home, the temperature changes through the four seasons differ from nature, and if it is higher than the temperature of the same period, it generally blooms earlier. Still, Aspidistra grown at home rarely blooms, and this is also related to the environment; it cannot be forced.

What to do if Aspidistra leaves turn yellow

1. Light should be appropriate

Aspidistra needs the bath of sunlight, but be careful that it is appropriate. If it is exposed to direct sun for a long time, or placed in the dark for a long time without sunlight, neither is good for the growth of Aspidistra leaves and will cause the leaves to turn yellow. It should be kept year-round in a bright place that does not receive direct sunlight.

2. Pay attention to scientific watering

When growing Aspidistra, pay attention to scientific watering. Aspidistra does not like an overly moist environment. If watered too much, it will affect normal root growth and cause the leaves to turn yellow. Therefore, in winter there is no need to water every day; just make sure the Aspidistra soil does not dry out. In the spring growing season, watering once a day is enough.

3. Pay attention to depth when planting

When planting Aspidistra, be careful not to bury the roots too deep. Aspidistra should be planted close to the soil surface, within 20 cm of the position. If the roots of Aspidistra are buried too deep, the roots are prone to rot, causing the leaves to turn yellow.

As described above, although Aspidistra can bloom, its flowers are rather special and inconspicuous, while its emerald-green, ever-green leaves have more ornamental value. Friends who like growing flowers at home might as well grow one or two pots of ever-green Aspidistra; it will be even more pleasing to look at!
