Many people may not be very familiar with gloxinia. In fact, gloxinia is a very gorgeous flowering plant, with elegant flower shapes and rich, vivid colors, and it has extremely high ornamental value, making it deeply loved and sought after by everyone. Gloxinia is generally grown in soil, so can gloxinia be grown in water? How do you grow gloxinia in water?

Can Gloxinia Be Grown in Water

Gloxinia can indeed be grown in water. Gloxinia belongs to the Gesneriaceae family, genus Sinningia, and is a perennial herb with a flattened spherical tuber, an extremely short aboveground stem, and a plant height of up to 25 cm, with the entire plant densely covered in white hairs. The leaves are opposite, thick, and serrated; the flowers are terminal or axillary, with bell-shaped corollas in colors such as pink, red, purple-blue, white, and multicolored, large and beautiful. It produces capsules, blooms from March to August, and flowers profusely in summer.

Hydroponic Growing Methods and Precautions for Gloxinia

1. Containers for water propagation of gloxinia

You can use leak-proof, non-toxic, odorless plastic bottles or glass containers. Before water propagation, it is best to scald them with hot water to sterilize and disinfect.

2. Selecting cuttings for gloxinia

After the tuber is planted and grows for a period of time, several young shoots will emerge. When they grow to 2—3 pairs of leaves, keep 1—2 stems to bloom, and the remaining young stems can be snapped off, remove the lower pair of leaves, and use them directly as cuttings without trimming.

You can also cut a healthy young stem after the flowers fade, with the tip 5—8 cm long, and use sharp scissors to cut the lower part of the stem 3—5 mm from the node, either flat or slightly slanted, and remove the lower leaves before using it as a cutting.

Take a thick, robust leaf from the middle-lower part of the plant that is not overly aged, and carefully snap it off from the base of the petiole to use as a cutting.

3. Steps for water propagation of gloxinia

Let ordinary tap water sit for 1 or 2 days, pour it into the container, then insert the cutting into the water, with the leaf exposed outside the container and the petiole and lower stem submerged in water by about 1.5—2 cm.

If there are few cuttings and the container is too deep and large, you can use a thin foam board, cut small holes in it, insert the lower part of the cuttings, and then let it float on the water surface.

After water propagation, place the container in a spot with indirect scattered sunlight, change the water about every two or three days, white adventitious roots will grow in about ten days, and tubers will form in about twenty days. After that, you can continue water propagation or transplant them.

4. Note: Water propagation is more suitable in May and June or August and September. If done in a greenhouse, water propagation can be carried out all year round.

How to Prune Gloxinia Before Flowering

Generally, before gloxinia blooms, prune the branches and buds by pinching off the growing tips.

Pinching means removing the topmost flowering shoot, thereby encouraging more side branches to grow, so that more flowers can bloom.

Pinching should be done early rather than late. Early pinching helps the plant take shape and bloom sooner. After pinching, select 2—3 new shoots of similar height and suitable position to keep, ensuring smooth flowering.

What Are the Benefits of Gloxinia

1. Gloxinia can decorate the environment

Gloxinia has beautiful flowers with vivid colors and a relatively long flowering period, so it has high ornamental value and is often used as an indoor display plant. A single gloxinia plant can usually produce dozens of flowers, and the lush, clustered appearance is very beautiful. It works very well as a potted flower for decorating the environment.

2. Gloxinia can purify the air

Gloxinia has a certain effect on purifying the air and can also remove dust.

Gloxinia can remove dust, beautify the surrounding environment, and make the surrounding environment fresher and cleaner. In addition, gloxinia can reduce indoor carbon dioxide concentration, thereby purifying indoor air. Placing a beautiful potted gloxinia indoors not only makes the indoor environment more pleasing to the eye, but is also very beneficial for purifying indoor air and keeping the air fresh.

3. Garden uses of gloxinia

Gloxinia is a good indoor decorative flower with a very good effect on beautifying the home environment. At the same time, gloxinia is also a common garden decorative flower, with high garden value.

Through the above content, I believe everyone has gained some understanding of the hydroponic methods for gloxinia. Gloxinia is not only beautiful, but can also purify the air, making it a flowering plant especially suitable for growing at home.
