Tulips are very fragrant plants that come from the Netherlands. Tulips are very popular flowers, symbolizing universal love, thoughtfulness, elegance, wealth, capability and intelligence, and red tulips especially represent deep love. So how do you grow potted tulips and what are the tulip potting cultivation methods and points to note? Let's take a look together.

How to Grow Potted Tulips

1. Tulip bulbs need a period of cold treatment before they can grow and bloom normally. Generally, bulbs sold through proper channels have already been treated, but you cannot rule out some unscrupulous sellers passing off room-temperature bulbs to customers. Before buying, be sure to ask clearly, and do not forget to disinfect the bulbs before planting. Formalin or carbendazim solution will both work. Soak the bulbs in the disinfecting solution for about 30 minutes. In addition, as needed, you can also drip in a few drops of gibberellic acid, which can promote bulb sprouting.

1. Tulip bulbs have a layer of grayish-brown skin on the outside. Generally, peeling it off before planting can increase the speed of sprouting and rooting and benefit growth. The growing medium can be appropriately mixed with some slow-release compound fertilizer as a base fertilizer. If there is no growing medium, sandy soil will also do, but the soil must be fertile, with good water permeability and air permeability. Before planting, first put some base soil in the flowerpot, then place the bulb in. Place the bulb in the center, upright. The planting depth is generally 1.5 times the size of the bulb. The number of bulbs to plant per pot depends on the size of the pot. Generally, a 20cm pot can hold 3 plants arranged in a triangle.

Tulip Potting Cultivation Methods and Points to Note

1. Light requirements: Tulips like a climate with plenty of sunlight, warm and humid winters, and cool, dry summers. They are very cold-hardy. In severely cold regions, if covered by thick snow, the bulbs can overwinter in the open field, but they fear intense summer heat. If summer comes early and midsummer is very hot, the bulbs will find it hard to get through summer after dormancy.

2. Points to note: Tulip flowers contain certain alkaline substances. So after touching tulip flowers, you should wash your hands promptly; if you have not washed your hands, do not touch your scalp; otherwise, it can easily cause hair loss. During the growth and development period, tulips must not be given nitrogen fertilizer; instead, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be applied. Improper fertilization will cause bulb degeneration. If tulips are planted in the same plot of land for many years, it will cause tulip bulb degeneration. This is because continuous cropping will lead to an insufficient supply of certain nutrient elements, affecting bulb growth and development.

What to Do After Tulips Bloom

1. After the flowers fade, cut them off 2-3 cm below the flower. Be sure not to cut too long, and the leaves must be retained. Apply a small amount of fertilizer and water normally. When it rains, control the amount of water to avoid root rot.

2. After a 2-month root-strengthening period, wait until the flower leaves and stems have all turned yellow, then dig out the bulbs before the rainy season. Be careful not to damage the bulbs, and remove the leaves and stems above the bulbs.

3. Place the bulbs in a cool place. It is best to find semi-moist sand and a large box, line the bottom with a plastic bag to prevent leakage, and bury the bulbs in it. If the sand is rather dry, spray a small amount of water after burying. Be sure not to use too much water, and be sure to keep it open to prevent the bulbs from rotting.

When to Water Tulips

1. When watering tulips, make sure the amount of water is moderate and just water thoroughly. It should not be too much, causing water to accumulate in the flowerpot and making the roots rot, nor too little, making the soil too dry. The watering frequency is generally about once every 3 days, which can both meet the water needed for growth and not affect the roots' ability to breathe freely.

2. In order to make the amount of water as suitable as possible when watering tulips, you can prepare a bucket with an appropriate amount of water, then put the flowerpot with holes in the bottom into the bucket and submerge it, then take it out after 30 seconds. This makes it easy to keep the watering level moderate and is a relatively appropriate watering method.

Tulips, most people have admired their beauty. In your spare time, growing a pot of tulips in your own living space can not only decorate the space, but also cultivate a hobby of your own. It can also appropriately relax your mood and add vitality and splendor to life.
