When it comes to clownfish, many people might think it is a very ugly fish, but that is not the case at all! Moreover, the clownfish is a very popular ornamental fish, with rich colors and a unique appearance, deeply loved by fish keepers. So do you know how to keep a clownfish? What do you generally feed a clownfish?

How to Keep Clownfish

1. First, to keep clownfish, you need to create a comfortable and cozy environment for them. Find a few live rocks and build a small cave with a natural barrier, keeping proper water flow inside the cave. It is best to place an oval pebble inside the cave, with the pebble pressed against the outside of the cave entrance. Since clownfish live symbiotically with sea anemones, it is best to find a relatively large sea anemone and place it at the cave entrance to protect the clownfish.

Secondly, when keeping multiple clownfish, try to introduce them into the tank at the same time. When you bring the clownfish home, quarantine them first, and once you confirm there are no problems, they can be added to the tank.

2. Thirdly, after clownfish arrive in a new environment, they may need a 2-3 day adaptation period. During these days, there is no need to feed them. After the adaptation period, get the clownfish to start eating, first feeding them brine shrimp, then gradually switching to flake food. Once they have fully settled down, pellet food, crushed shrimp meat or other omnivorous bait are all fine.

3. Finally, if you keep clownfish in a bare tank, be sure to reduce the water flow at night so as not to disturb the clownfish's rest and thereby affect their development. And before they grow into adults, be sure to give them plenty of light. During this time the fish grow relatively fast, and insufficient light can easily affect their development.

What Clownfish Eat

The food of clownfish is relatively simple. Fry are fed rotifers. After they grow to 10cm, they can be fed pellet food, crushed shrimp meat or other omnivorous bait. However, in the first two months, some natural astaxanthin should be added to the food; spirulina powder can make the fish's colors more vivid. Because the domestication time at breeding farms is relatively short, it is even better if you can add some brine shrimp after feeding.

Notes on Keeping Clownfish

1. Quarantine and isolate new fish before adding them to the tank. Although it takes some time and money, doing so avoids many fish getting sick later, which would cost you more than you save. Isolation and quarantine mainly eliminate parasites on the fish, ensuring that they are healthy and free of parasites when they enter the tank, and it can also help the clownfish get familiar with the environment. During this process, you can also train the clownfish to start eating. A quarantine period of 4—6 weeks is enough, and you must not shorten the time out of impatience.

2. After the clownfish have completed quarantine, they are ready to enter the tank. When putting the fish into the tank, avoid shaking the clownfish vigorously; make sure the water temperature of the quarantine tank and the fish tank are the same; observe whether the fish in the tank are hostile to the newly introduced clownfish. If there is hostility, keep the new fish isolated and only mix them together after the hostility has disappeared. Before the new fish enter the tank, make sure the environment of the quarantine tank and the main tank are consistent, so that the new fish do not fail to adapt to the new environment.

3. Clownfish need to be fed regularly and in fixed amounts every day. When feeding, you should get them used to the siphon tube, your hands and other commonly used equipment. For example, first wave the siphon tube in front of them, or try to train them to eat food directly from your hand. Water changes should also be done regularly. When changing the water, the new water should be added slowly and must not directly wash over the fish's body surface, so as to avoid harming the clownfish.

How Long Do Clownfish Live

The lifespan of clownfish is not very long, and on average they can live to 10 to 12 years. Clownfish live in the ocean and have many spots that allow them to camouflage themselves, so they choose to live in coral reefs, often eating some coral polyps and small fish and shrimp to sustain themselves. Clownfish are oviparous, and generally after 7-8 months they can become young. Newly born clownfish can only eat coral polyps.

As mentioned above, as marine fish become more and more popular, the popularity of clownfish is also rising day by day. However, although clownfish are easy to keep, you still need to master the care techniques well!
