The Latest Planting Time for Corn, What Season Corn Is Harvested In, and How Corn Spreads Its Seeds
Many people have surely eaten corn. It has very high edible value and tastes excellent, so many people like to eat it now. At present, many people in China grow corn, but when planting it, many people are not very clear about its planting time and harvest season. Let us learn about it together below!
The Latest Planting Time for Corn
The latest planting time for corn is the middle of July each year. Corn is divided into spring corn and autumn corn according to different planting times. Spring corn is sown in late April and early May, and can be harvested in late August. Autumn corn must be sown no later than mid-July and is harvested in mid-to-late October. During the life of corn, according to morphological characteristics, growth and development characteristics, and physiological characteristics, it can be divided into several different growth stages. Each stage includes different growth periods. These different stages and periods each have their own characteristics and are also closely related.
What Season Corn Is Harvested In
Because weather conditions vary from place to place, corn harvest times also differ somewhat. Generally, they are during August to October, and they are not consistent across the country. In Hebei Province, summer-sown corn generally matures from mid-to-late September to mid-October, while spring-sown corn generally matures from early September to mid-September. In the north, spring sowing is mainly used, mainly referring to Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and northern Hebei, among other places. Other places basically use summer sowing and also have spring sowing. The maturity period of corn in the north is generally from September 15 to September 23, while in the south it is mostly after mid-October.
How Corn Spreads Its Seeds
1. Corn is a monoecious crop with separate male and female flowers. The male flowers are at the top of the corn plant. On sunny days, the male flowers of corn shed pollen, and through the action of wind, the pollen is transferred to the silks of the female ears in the middle. After fertilization, kernels are formed. After maturity, the seeds are spread by people, animals, and so on.
2. The individual kernels on the corn cob are the seeds of corn. People remove them one by one and plant them in the field, then harvest corn seeds, which can be eaten and so on.
3. When animals eat corn, some corn kernels will remain uneaten. The corn kernels sprout and grow, and they are also seeds.
4. They grow and mature naturally, the root system rots, and the seeds sprout again in the soil and grow into corn.
How to Plant Corn
1. Seed treatment: Corn seeds that have been dried in the sun absorb water quickly after sowing, germinate early, emerge uniformly, have a high emergence rate, and produce strong seedlings.
2. Reasonable dense planting: Reasonable density should consider variety characteristics. Secondly, if soil fertility is good and the amount of fertilizer applied is large and reasonable, the suitable density is greater. In areas prone to drought and without irrigation conditions, the planting density should be sparse.
3. Calculation of sowing amount: Seed amount (kg) = sowing density × number of seeds per hole × grain weight × area. Emphasis should be placed on developing precise corn sowing technology and improving sowing quality.
4. Sowing depth: Sowing depth is generally 5-6 cm as suitable. In clay soil with good moisture, sowing should be appropriately shallow, with 4-5 cm as suitable. In loose sandy loam, sowing should be appropriately deep, with 6-8 cm as suitable. If soil moisture is relatively high, deep sowing is not suitable; if the soil is dry, sowing should be appropriately deep.
5. Pressing after sowing: After covering with soil after sowing, appropriate pressing should be done. In drought, heavy pressing is needed, while when there is too much soil moisture, do not press.
6. Appropriate application of seed fertilizer: Applying an appropriate amount of seed fertilizer can supply sufficient nutrients to seedlings, promote growth during the seedling stage, and enhance resistance to adverse factors such as drought, low temperature, and disease. Seed fertilizer includes a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer, phosphate fertilizer, potassium fertilizer, and trace element fertilizers. When using seed fertilizer, the amount should be controlled and the seed fertilizer should be separated to avoid burning seedlings. Generally, applying 5-8 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu has a good effect.
There are two planting times for corn. One is spring, and the latest is autumn, so more attention should be paid. The harvest season for corn is autumn, although some places may differ somewhat. The spread of corn is generally of two types: human-caused and self-spread.
