Today, the editor will talk about growing figs. At present, figs are being grown in many places. Their nutritional value is very high, and they taste sweet. Squeezed into juice, they can quench thirst and have a delicate fragrance, so they are deeply loved by people. Every plant has its own specific growing method. Only by considering many aspects can planting succeed. So, what issues should be considered when growing figs? How should they be solved? Let's find out together with the editor!

Fig growing conditions

1. Reasonable propagation

There are mainly three propagation methods for figs, namely cuttings, layering, and division. The most commonly used method is propagation by cuttings. This method is fast, easy to operate, and has a relatively high survival rate. In spring, suitable branches can be selected for cuttings, and the temperature should be kept between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Generally, they can take root in 3 to 4 days.

2. Transplanting and field planting

After the cuttings take root and grow leaves, they can be transplanted. The planting distance is generally about 2 m. The planting seasons are divided into spring planting and winter planting. For spring propagation, it is done in early March, while for winter, it is done from November to December before the soil freezes.

3. Reasonable thinning and pruning

In fig growing techniques, pruning is an indispensable step. After the fig grows a little larger, appropriate thinning and pruning are also needed to promote the plant's growth and development. It is enough to keep 3 to 5 main branches for the whole plant, and no side branches should be kept. During the seedling stage, timely pinching and topping are needed to promote more branching and allow the crown to expand rapidly.

4. Care and management

After successful transplanting, the soil should be loosened and weeds removed frequently to save nutrients and promote more branching. After pruning, fertilizer should be applied in time, mainly nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers. Except that figs need a large amount of water when fruiting, at other times they do not need much watering; normal rainwater is enough. If the soil becomes waterlogged, it will cause root rot.

Fig growing risks

With rapid economic development and rising living standards, people's understanding of figs has gradually increased. Now, in addition to fresh fruit, there are also quick-frozen fruit, preserved fruit, dried fruit, fruit wine, and jam. The variety of edible products continues to increase, and its production volume is far from meeting market demand. Figs like a warm and humid climate, tolerate poor soil, resist drought, and are not cold-tolerant or waterlogging-tolerant. It is suitable to cultivate them on sunny sandy loam or clay loam with deep soil, loose fertility, and good drainage. Their growing techniques and storage are two major difficulties. If these two major difficulties can be solved, growing figs can bring an annual income of more than ten thousand yuan per mu, and growing figs is still risk-free.

How to protect figs through the winter

Figs like a warm and slightly dry climate and have low cold resistance. When cultivated in temperate regions, the branches and trunks are often susceptible to freezing, especially young trees under 5 years old. In winter, when encountering low temperatures of around 16 degrees, there is a risk that the whole plant will freeze to death. In the Huaibei region, during overwintering, soil should be banked around the base of the trunk to prevent freezing, to a height of about 35 cm. After thawing in spring, the banked soil should be removed. Large branches and trunks can be wrapped in straw for winter protection. As the tree age increases, its overwintering ability gradually strengthens. Once the plant is frozen, the frozen branches should be pruned away in time, and after sprouting, care should be taken to select new branches to replace them. Sometimes, even if the aboveground part is completely frozen to death, the following spring it can still sprout strong branches from the soil-banked root crown area, forming a new crown.

How to sow fig seeds for the highest germination rate

1. Select high-quality, plump fig seeds. Choose flat land with sufficient sunlight for planting.

2. Prepare the land in advance, remove weeds, apply fertilizer, and water. Keep the sowing depth at about 1 to 2 cm.

Growing techniques are also very particular. It turns out that growing figs also carries risks. Choose a better growing method according to the plant's habits. Based on the above understanding, have you gained something? We should pay special attention to preventing pests from damaging figs. Do you understand now?
