When Do Green Jujubes Ripen and Hit the Market? Plus Cultivation Techniques
Green jujubes are also very rich in vitamins and dietary fiber, which is why they are so popular among a wide range of friends. Many people like to grow some green jujubes at home, so what cultivation techniques are there for green jujubes? Generally, in which month do green jujubes ripen? At what time is it freshest to buy green jujubes at the supermarket? I believe this is also a question that consumers care about very much. So, next, the editor will answer them for you one by one.
Cultivation Techniques for Green Jujubes
1. Site selection
Green jujubes have strong adaptability and do not demand much from the soil, but they have high requirements for fertilizer, sunlight and water sources. They need to be planted in paddy fields, flat slopes or terraced dry fields with sufficient light and convenient irrigation. When planted in places with poor light, drought, frequent typhoons or water shortages, their yield and quality will be affected to varying degrees.
2. Variety selection
There are relatively many varieties of green jujube, and different green jujubes differ greatly in yield, quality, fruit shape and flavor. The main varieties include Huangguan, Hongyun, Wuqian and others. You can proceed from the actual conditions of the orchard and select excellent varieties for planting, but you need to note that 2% pollinator trees should be planted to increase the fruit-setting rate of green jujubes.
3. Reasonable planting
The best planting season for green jujubes is from March to May, when the temperature is not high, the climate is humid and there is plenty of rain. They begin to bloom in August and begin to ripen in November. If management is scientific and in place, the yield per green jujube plant can reach 10 kg, making it possible to put into production and harvest in the same year.
4. Fertilizer and water management
The base fertilizer for green jujubes makes up a large proportion, accounting for 50% of the total annual fertilizer application. For newly planted fruit trees, when digging the planting holes, apply 15 kg of decomposed poultry and livestock manure per hole, and 0.5 kg of phosphate fertilizer and 1 kg of bran fertilizer per hole. Mix all the base fertilizer with soil before backfilling, then after all the organic fertilizer has been backfilled, fill back the topsoil, and leave it 20 cm above the ground to avoid water accumulation on rainy days.
5. Pruning and fruit protection
Pruning of green jujube branches should mainly focus on lateral slanting growth. The crown area is large and there are relatively many branches, so scientific pruning is needed to form a good tree shape, facilitate ventilation and light, effectively reduce pests and diseases, and improve the yield and quality of green jujubes. When training the trunk, ensuring a tall old main trunk can promote early flowering and ripening of green jujubes.
6. Pest and disease control and harvesting
Green jujubes have relatively few pests and diseases, mainly scale insects and fruit flies. If scale insects appear, quickly use Lorsban and similar products to kill them, and fruit flies can be killed with trichlorfon. Pesticide spraying should stop 20 days before fruit harvest.
When Do Green Jujubes Ripen (Market Time)
Green jujubes ripen and go on the market from November each year to March of the following year, right in time for the harvest period from New Year's Day to the Spring Festival. People who like eating jujubes might as well buy some fresh green jujubes at this time, and they will certainly not be disappointed. However, although green jujubes are delicious, they should not be eaten too much, because eating large amounts of green jujubes will affect the stomach and intestines. The skin of green jujubes is relatively hard and not so easy to digest.
How Many Green Jujube Trees to Plant per Mu
The most suitable planting time for large green jujubes is from February to April, depending on the weather. Where there is a water source, they can be planted all year round.
1. Number per mu: Taiwan green jujubes grow rapidly and their crowns expand quickly. For ordinary cultivation, 2×3 m is suitable, with about 110 plants per mu; for dense planting cultivation: 2.5×2.5 m, about 110 plants per mu; dense planting is conducive to high yields in the early stage. It is recommended to measure the number of plants per mu according to the fertility of your own land. Generally, 55-80 plants per mu is suitable.
2. Planting method: The planting hole should be 45-80 cm wide and deep. Mix 12-20 jin of decomposed compost with 0.5 kg of compound fertilizer, 0.5 kg of calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer, 0.2 kg of magnesium phosphate, 0.025 kg of boron fertilizer, and a small amount of quicklime and subsoil, fill the hole and firm it, then plant and press firmly. Make a shallow basin shape of 20 cm around the base of the seedling to facilitate irrigation. When necessary, cover it basically with rice straw to prevent scorching by the sun. Ensure good drainage to avoid flooding, and set up support stakes to fix the seedlings and prevent them from being loosened by wind, which would affect growth.
3. Selection of pollinator trees: Some varieties need interplanting with pollinator trees to set fruit easily, while others do not. For those that need pollinator trees, the best ratio of fruiting trees to pollinator trees is 1 to 1, and at least 10 to 1 is suitable. You can choose 1—2 varieties to plant together as mutual pollinator trees, which can increase yield.
Can Green Jujube Pits Be Planted
Generally, except for breeding purposes, seedlings grown from seed are not used. One- to two-year-old jujube tree seedlings should cost around ten-plus yuan, not too expensive. Sow when one third to one half of the seed has cracked. Planting is not easy to develop into normal seedlings. The kernels of the jujube pits we usually use are mostly shriveled. Wash off the fruit flesh in water, and after the grafted plants survive, they can be planted in the next planting season. After removing them, mix them into three times their volume of wet sand to break dormancy. About 5-7 days before sowing, sieve out the seeds, sprinkle water and cover them to promote germination.
In the article above, through the editor's introduction, I believe everyone has gained a deep understanding of green jujube cultivation techniques. In fact, besides green jujubes, many other fruits are also very rich in nutrients. So in daily life, everyone can also eat more fruits of different varieties.
