Spinach is a very common vegetable in our daily lives; whether at the vegetable market or the supermarket, you can see it everywhere. Spinach has high nutritional value; it not only supplements iron for human health, but can also prevent and treat iron-deficiency anemia. However, many people still do not know much about how to grow spinach, so let us introduce it to you in detail below.

Scientific Spinach Cultivation Techniques

1. When choosing seeds, pay attention to the shelf life. Seeds past their shelf life have a low germination rate. Depending on the temperature, you can choose heat-tolerant or cold-tolerant varieties. In our Central China region, the weather in October is already suitable for sowing spinach, because spinach is very cold-tolerant and will not be damaged by freezing even when it snows in winter.

2. Prepare flower pots and soil; ordinary garden soil is fine. You can add a small amount of coarse sand or coal ash to increase the soil's air permeability, so that it will not become waterlogged or compacted. This would otherwise hinder the root system during spinach growth and affect its growth.

3. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil, then water thoroughly, and place in a well-ventilated spot. Wait for germination. Generally, germination and seedling emergence occur in about a week. When watering, do not pour too much, or the seeds will be washed away.

4. After germination, once the plants have grown more than two leaves, you can fertilize. Be sure to use fully decomposed organic fertilizer. Decomposed chicken manure or nutrient soil both work. Apply a small amount each time, using light fertilizer frequently.

5. Common pests and diseases include leafminer flies or downy mildew. Basking in the sun more and maintaining ventilation are key. If there are many pests and diseases, you can spray pesticides such as trichlorfon to eliminate them.

6. In autumn and winter, when there is frost or snow, you can cover the plants with some dry grass or plastic film to keep them warm. On sunny days, open the plastic film to let them bask in the sun.

How to Grow Spinach

1. Sowing and raising seedlings

The spinach cultivation method is broadcasting. Before sowing, first soak the seeds in water for 12 hours. After soaking, place them in the refrigerator to chill for 24 hours, then take them out and place them in an environment of 20-25 degrees to promote germination. They will sprout in about 3-5 days, and once sprouted, they can be sown. To ensure yield, sow about 3.5kg per mu. After sowing, water thoroughly once, cover with 2-3cm of soil, and keep the soil moist. Complete seedling emergence occurs in about a week.

2. Field management

Spinach has strong growth vigor; once the seedlings emerge, they can basically be left to grow on their own. However, to ensure yield, thinning is needed when true leaves appear, and weeding can be done at the same time as thinning. When 3-4 true leaves have grown, a dilute liquid fertilizer can be applied once. When fertilizing, it should not be too concentrated, so that excessive fertilizer strength does not burn the roots and cause death.

When to Plant Spinach

1. Spinach can be planted all year round. Because its planting time differs, it can be divided into four varieties: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The four varieties all have different requirements for light intensity and duration.

2. Spring spinach is planted in early spring in March. After the beginning of spring, once the temperature rises above 5 degrees, it can be sown. It can be harvested one to two months after sowing.

3. Summer spinach has strong heat tolerance and grows quickly. It can be sown in 5-7 and harvested in 6-9.

4. Autumn spinach has relatively strong heat tolerance. It is generally sown in 8-9 and can be harvested in 9-10.

5. Overwintering spinach has strong cold tolerance. It is usually sown in 10-11 and harvested around the Spring Festival.

Growing Conditions for Spinach

1. Temperature

Spinach is a cold-tolerant vegetable. The seeds can germinate at 4°C, with the optimum being 15-20°C. The suitable temperature for vegetative growth is 15-20°C. Growth is poor above 25°C. The aboveground part can withstand low temperatures of minus 6-8°C.

2. Sunlight

Spinach is a long-day crop. Under high temperature and long-day conditions, the plants tend to bolt and flower. It does not have strict requirements for sunlight intensity and can be intercropped or relay-cropped with tall-stemmed crops.

3. Water

Spinach has a large leaf area and tender tissues, so it has relatively high water requirements. With sufficient water, vigorous growth produces thick flesh, high yield, and good quality. Under high temperature, long-day, and drought conditions, vegetative growth is inhibited, reproductive growth is accelerated, and premature bolting easily occurs.

4. Soil

Spinach has strong adaptability to soil, but fertile soil with strong water and fertilizer retention is still best. Spinach is not acid-tolerant, and the suitable pH is 7.3-8.2. Spinach is a leafy vegetable and needs relatively more nitrogen fertilizer and appropriate phosphorus and potassium fertilizer.

Spinach is a vegetable that can be eaten all year round, so spinach cultivation can be carried out all year round. The cultivation method of spinach is not very difficult, and its adaptability to soil is also very strong. Those who like it can try it themselves.
