Pepperwood is a tree species introduced and cultivated in China from abroad. It is currently distributed in a small number of areas in China and is a tree of high value. It is precisely because pepperwood has so many uses that many people now want to grow it, but before growing it, what everyone probably cares about most are its cultivation techniques!

Pepperwood cultivation methods and care tips

1. Cultivation methods:

1. Soil selection: Pepperwood is drought-tolerant and likes to grow in soil that does not easily become waterlogged, so the soil must be chosen for good water permeability.

2. Watering points: Pepperwood does not need to be watered too frequently; once every 3—5 days is suitable, and each watering must soak through, meaning the water must wet the bottom. If it is watered too much over a long period, root rot will occur.

3. Sunlight management: Pepperwood likes to grow in places with sufficient light and can be exposed to the sun every day, but do not expose it to strong sun for long periods. Generally, placing it on a balcony or in a sunny indoor spot is fine. Pepperwood can also tolerate shade, and going several days without sun will not affect its growth.

4. Temperature management: Pepperwood seedlings are not very cold-resistant. If planted in North China, they need protection. The plant can withstand a low temperature of -10°C, and as long as it is placed indoors, it can safely get through winter.

5. Fertilization points: Pepperwood does not have very high fertilizer requirements. Seedlings should be fertilized as little as possible or even not at all, to avoid excessive fertility causing fertilizer burn or leggy growth.

2. Care tips:

Pepperwood grows relatively slowly, but it is easy to shape. Shaping techniques such as coiling, tying, twisting and pressing can be flexibly applied to style it. After several years of care and management, an ideal pepperwood potted plant can be cultivated.

Pepperwood bonsai styling methods

1. Pot selection: Pepperwood bonsai can be styled using purple clay pottery pots or glazed pottery pots. The shape of the pot should be determined by the shape of the tree. For the cascade style, use a tall, deep cylindrical pot; for the slanting-trunk style and the lying-trunk style, use a medium-deep rectangular or oval pot; for the exposed-root style and the rock-clinging style, use a relatively shallow pot.

2. Soil: Pepperwood bonsai should use fertile, moist, loose-textured, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy loam. Place a layer of coarse sandy soil at the bottom of the pot to help with drainage.

3. Plant styling: For pepperwood bonsai styling, when potting and styling, wiring and bending should be the main method, combined appropriately with pruning. Wiring and bending should be done during the dormant period, using palm fiber for tying, making sure the fiber is not exposed. The trunk should be curved and the branches twisted, with a natural posture. Prune the small branches and leaves of pepperwood into layered sheets or hemispherical shapes, so that the layers look uneven and well-arranged.

Pepperwood pest and disease control

1. In fact, pepperwood has relatively few pests and diseases. Anthracnose and aphids are the two common ones. In the early stage of anthracnose, alternately spray 500 times dilution of 25% carbendazim wettable powder, or 1000 times dilution of 50% procymidone wettable powder, or 1000 times dilution of 72.2% propamocarb aqueous solution, using 1 of these 3 solutions for 3 consecutive sprays, with an interval of 7-10 days during this period.

2. If it is aphids, generally 1000-1500 times dilution of 25% kuishaling emulsifiable concentrate, or 6000 times dilution of 21% mieshabi, or 3000 times dilution of 2.5% tianwangxing emulsifiable concentrate can be used for spraying control.

When growing pepperwood, soil selection must be done well, and daily sunlight and temperature control are also very important. Timely fertilizer and water management and pest and disease control are also needed, so that pepperwood can grow better. As for styling, this can be chosen according to your own preferences.
