Tsao-ko cardamom (Amomum tsaoko) is fairly widely distributed in Guangxi, Yunnan and other parts of China, and it is a food that combines both edible and medicinal value. It is precisely because tsao-ko cardamom has such good benefits that many people now want to grow it. However, when growing tsao-ko cardamom, you first need to understand its planting techniques and also master a few precautions.

How to Grow Tsao-ko Cardamom

1. Site selection: Tsao-ko cardamom likes to grow in fertile soil and is generally found more often in valleys or beside streams. When planting, cut down excessive trees, keep the shade density at 50%, and also clear away all weeds before ploughing the land.

2. Planting out: When planting out, choose a good spot, then dig the soil 20-27 cm deep, and after letting it weather for a period, dig holes about 13 cm wide and 7-10 cm deep at a spacing of 1.3-1.7 m between plants, hold the seedling upright in the hole, and firm the soil over it. Most tsao-ko cardamom is transplanted around the Spring Equinox.

Tsao-ko Cardamom Planting Techniques and Precautions

I. Planting techniques:

1. Choosing the nursery site is very important, because the quality of the nursery directly affects its growth. In order for the sown seeds to develop normally and for transplanting to be convenient when the seedlings leave the nursery, the nursery land should be chosen close to the transplanting site. Choose forest soil with good drainage and irrigation conditions, deep soil layers, loose texture and more organic matter; a slope of 5-15 degrees, with the slope direction facing northeast or northwest as a semi-shaded slope; the required shade density is 30-60%. A nursery can be set up under evergreen broad-leaved forest, or the method of building an artificial shed can also be used.

2. Land preparation and sowing: Doing the land preparation work well is also key to raising seedlings, as it helps improve soil permeability. As for the quality and method of land preparation, the general requirement is to turn the topsoil 10-20 cm deep, burn the soil clods, break up the clods, pick out weeds and stones, make the soil fully fine and crumbly, and mix it thoroughly with the base fertiliser before sowing. When planting, you must make the right choice of spacing.

II. Precautions:

Because the outside of the tsao-ko cardamom seed is wrapped in a layer of white gelatinous fibrous filamentous membrane, water and oxygen find it difficult to penetrate into the embryo. If the filamentous membrane is not removed, it will affect seed germination. Therefore, it must be rubbed repeatedly with plant ash or fine sand, so before planting, this thin membrane layer must be removed before sowing.

Field Management of Tsao-ko Cardamom

1. Drainage and irrigation after planting tsao-ko cardamom must be done well. In the flowering season, if there is too much rain, it will cause flower rot; conversely, if it is too dry, the flowers are prone to withering, causing a reduction in yield. Therefore, if drought occurs, those with the means should divert water for irrigation. If there is too much rain, drainage work should be done well, weeds completely removed, and humidity lowered to reduce bud rot. In the flowering season, if rain falls once during May to July, this is very beneficial for fruit set and fruit retention, and can also increase its yield.

2. After planting tsao-ko cardamom, timely pruning is also needed. The leaves of tsao-ko cardamom are renewed every year, and dead old plants should be cut away in good time to favour the growth of new plants. When pruning, some overly dense branches and leaves can be appropriately harvested for use in essential oil production. The pruning time is generally chosen around October to November each year.

The planting method for tsao-ko cardamom is actually not difficult. When planting, you must do the site selection work well, and then plant at the right time. After planting, field management work also needs to be strengthened. Only by doing all of this well can you ensure that tsao-ko cardamom grows better.
