During the planting process, carry out bonsai shaping according to the growth characteristics of hawthorn. A combination of pruning and wiring can be used for shaping. In daily care, pay attention to appropriate watering and fertilizing, and do a good job of protecting flowers and fruits.

1. Seedling preparation

Potted hawthorns are generally grafted. If conditions permit, you can go into the wild to find some dwarf, small-canopy rootstock heads with relatively good tree shapes to use as rootstock for grafting hawthorn, thereby cultivating hawthorn bonsai plants.

2. Potting time

Potting can be done in both spring and autumn, but it is best to choose autumn, as this will be better for the growth of hawthorn. Choose purple clay pots or unglazed pots to plant hawthorn. Choose soil with relatively mild fertility made by mixing garden soil and a small amount of decomposed stable manure and put it into the pot. It is advisable to keep the soil pH value at 6-7.5.

3. Shaping and pruning

Carry out bonsai shaping according to the growth characteristics of hawthorn. When pruning hawthorn, prune the tips of young trees more to promote the growth and development of side branches; from mid-July to August, hawthorn enters the flower bud differentiation stage. At this time, ring-barking or ring-cutting can be carried out on hawthorn to promote flower bud differentiation; a combination of pruning and wiring can be used to shape hawthorn, but during the pruning and wiring process, avoid breaking hawthorn branches, and also promptly thin out relatively dense flowers and fruits to ensure that the hawthorn tree can bear fruit smoothly the following year.

4. Daily care

Choose a place with sufficient light and air circulation to plant hawthorn bonsai. They do not have very high water requirements; just keep the pot soil moist. In autumn, appropriately reduce the amount of watering, and in winter, water less or not at all.

Fertilize appropriately. Generally, apply a certain amount of base fertilizer in winter, apply a thin phosphorus-potassium fertilizer after flowering, and in autumn apply an appropriate amount of additional fertilizer according to the growth condition of the bonsai. Remember not to apply nitrogen fertilizer to hawthorn bonsai.

Hawthorn bonsai also bears fruit. During the full flowering period of hawthorn bonsai, carry out ring-barking on strong trees and vigorous branches to protect flowers and fruits, then spray 30ppm gibberellin to increase the fruiting rate of hawthorn.
