AbstractThe snake plant needs to be planted in a suitable pot with loose soil. The most important part of the growing process is plenty of sunlight. During this time, care and management should be strengthened, watering 1-2 times a week. Later, nitrogen fertilizer can be applied as a top dressing to promote the growth and development of the snake plant. Timely pruning is also needed to ensure there is growing space and to help it absorb sunlight, so that it grows taller and more vigorously. The pot can be changed every two years, and nutrients must be added to the new soil to ensure sufficient nutrition.

Snake Plant Care Methods

Snake plant cultivation requires soil with good air permeability and a loose texture. Therefore, when mixing soil for the snake plant, use 2/3 leaf mold and add 1/3 garden soil to ensure the soil is breathable and loose, so that water does not evaporate in a way that causes the roots and rhizomes to rot. For the pot, generally choose a plastic pot, porcelain pot, ceramic pot, or clay pot for cultivation, with a pot diameter of 16-30cm being suitable.

Because the snake plant is a root-spreading plant, usually after planting a few plants it can fill the pot in one year. When planting, place a small amount of soil at the bottom of the pot, then plant the snake plants evenly in the pot. Although the root system of the snake plant is not deep, if a tall-footed pot is chosen, it will give the plant shape a sense of beauty and look better visually.

Secrets to Making the Snake Plant Grow Taller

1. Plenty of sunlight

The snake plant needs sufficient light for growth. Generally, it can be placed directly in a sunny spot. If conditions are not ideal, it should still be placed close to sunlight. If it is kept in a dark place for a long time, the leaves of the snake plant will turn yellow.

2. Suitable temperature

The suitable growing temperature for the snake plant is around 20-30°C, and in winter it must not fall below 10°C. Those growing it in the north should pay even more attention to protection.

3. Timely watering

If the soil is loose, the snake plant can be watered 2 times a week, while in winter, because the temperature is relatively low, watering only once a week is enough.

4. Proper pruning

The snake plant grows faster than ordinary household green plants, so when the snake plant fills the pot, it should be pruned properly. Cut off old leaves and overly dense leaves so that it has growing space and can absorb sunlight.

5. Changing the pot

The snake plant multiplies relatively quickly, so the pot needs to be changed once every 2 years. Nutrients must be added to the new soil in the pot to ensure the snake plant can absorb sufficient nutrition.

6. Fertilizing

The snake plant does not have a high demand for fertilizer. During the growing period, fertilize 2 times a month. When fertilizing, dilute the fertilizer solution so that the snake plant grows vigorously.

7. Pest and disease control

The main diseases of the snake plant are anthracnose and leaf spot disease. During this period, 50% carbendazim can be sprayed for control, while for weevil pests, a 1000-fold solution of 50% fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed to kill them.

8. Propagation methods

The snake plant can be propagated by division and cuttings. Division is generally done in spring by cutting overgrown leaf clusters into several parts. The divided snake plants must have leaves and rhizomes, and then they are replanted in pots. Cuttings are generally taken around May-June. During this period, cut the leaves into small sections of 5-6cm, then insert them into sandy soil, and they will take root after one month. However, golden-edged snake plants are not very suitable for cuttings, and the division method can be used for propagation instead.
