Watermelon radish planting time and method: sow in holes in late September, harvest in 3 months
Watermelon radish prefers cool conditions and plenty of light, so when choosing a planting site, you need to select a sandy soil that retains water and fertilizer, has a deep soil layer, drains normally, is rich in humus and is slightly acidic. When sowing, you need to prepare the land with deep plowing, apply plenty of fertilizer after sun exposure, control the sowing density well, spray an appropriate amount of pesticide, etc. Later, you need to thin the seedlings, and after final thinning, carry out intertillage and weeding, rational topdressing, watering, etc.
1. Cultivation conditions
Watermelon radish prefers cool conditions and has a high demand for light. When choosing a planting site, you need to pay attention to basic conditions such as temperature and light, and select a sandy soil that retains water and fertilizer, has a deep soil layer, is rich in humus, drains normally and is slightly acidic. The choice of planting site is very important; it directly affects the growth of the radish, thereby reducing the quality and yield of the radish and affecting its economic benefits.
2. Sowing conditions
After choosing the planting site, first prepare the land with deep plowing to a depth of about 35 cm. After sun exposure, apply sufficient base fertilizer, and control the amount of fertilizer according to the planting area. It is mainly based on decomposed farmyard manure, applied together with potassium fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer. The planting time is generally chosen in late September each year, generally using hole sowing. First, control the sowing density and dig holes, place 2 to 3 seeds in each hole, then pour enough manure water, press firm, and water again to improve the soil's water retention capacity. Spray an appropriate amount of herbicide, and finally cover with rice straw to retain moisture and prevent the soil from crusting.
3. Later management
When the seedlings grow true leaves, carry out the first thinning. When 4 true leaves have grown, thin again. To provide enough space for healthy, strong seedlings, remove weak and dead seedlings. When the seedlings grow 5 true leaves, final thinning can be carried out. After final thinning, intertillage and weed to prevent nutrient loss from the seedlings and avoid affecting their normal growth. When using herbicide, pay attention to the amount to prevent herbicide damage to the seedlings.
4. Rational water and fertilizer
Watermelon radish has a very large demand for water and is not drought-tolerant. When planting, the soil must be kept moist. Especially after sowing, sufficient water must be ensured. After emergence, water appropriately to promote the growth of the fleshy root. During the growth of the fleshy root, water appropriately as well to prevent excessive vegetative growth. During the seedling stage, apply less fertilizer, and carry out topdressing after final thinning. Fertilization can be done together with weeding and earthing up, and during the growth period, fertilize at least 4 times.
5. Timely harvest
Watermelon radish can generally be harvested about 90 days after sowing. As long as early management is good, at this time a single root can generally weigh about 2 kg, and the yield per mu can reach more than 5000 kg. Based on the above data, the output value per mu can basically reach about 10,000 yuan, and the benefits are very good.
