Planting time for early waxy corn

Early waxy corn is very suitable for sowing in stages, and different methods can be used for sowing, from late February all the way to late July. The methods are as follows: in late February, because the temperature is still relatively low, small tunnels or hotbeds are used to raise seedlings, which are then planted out; in early March, direct cultivation with plastic film mulching can be used; from early April to late July, open-field direct sowing can be used for cultivation. This staged sowing method can keep waxy corn in supply continuously from June to October each year.

Methods for growing waxy corn

1. Isolated cultivation

When growing waxy corn, it is necessary to try to keep it isolated from sweet corn or other types of corn, because if it is planted mixed with other types of corn, their pollen will affect each other. Therefore, when isolating, measures should be taken in both time and space: in terms of space, different types of corn should be isolated by more than 200 m; in terms of time, the sowing periods of different types of corn should be staggered, with an interval of at least 20 days.

2. Sowing in stages

When growing waxy corn, as long as the temperature is stable above 12 degrees, sowing can begin, and then continuous sowing can be carried out. After the first sowing, sowing can be done according to market conditions, with an interval of about 7-10 days between each sowing. As long as the harvest temperature has not reached above 18 degrees, sowing can continue.

3. Temperature requirements

Waxy corn likes a humid environment and has particularly high requirements for light and temperature. Only a suitable environment can allow it to grow better and thus increase yield. Because the flowering period of waxy corn is very intolerant of high temperatures, if the temperature during pollination exceeds 37 degrees, the mortality rate of pollen will increase greatly, and the seed-setting rate will be greatly reduced. Therefore, during pollination, high-temperature seasons should be avoided as much as possible.

4. Fertilisation and weeding

Waxy corn likes fertile soil, and a large amount of fertiliser is needed when planting, among which nitrogen fertiliser is the most needed, followed by potassium fertiliser and phosphorus fertiliser. When planting, a fertilisation plan needs to be reasonably formulated, with rational fertilisation and scientific fertilisation.

When fertilising, the following principles should be mastered: base fertiliser as the main part, topdressing as the supplement; organic fertiliser as the main part, chemical fertiliser as the supplement; apply sufficient base fertiliser, and topdress in stages. Only in this way can the yield of waxy corn be increased and high-quality waxy corn be produced.

For weeding, generally glyphosate is used to spray the field before planting, and then the field is ploughed.
