Polygonum multiflorum planting time and methods, different propagation methods have different times
AbstractThe planting methods of Polygonum multiflorum include seed propagation, cutting propagation, layering propagation and division propagation, etc. Seed propagation: collect seeds in autumn, sow in early March to early July of the following year. Cutting propagation: carried out in March-April each year or in October of autumn. Layering propagation: suitable for spring and summer. Division propagation: at the time of harvesting Polygonum multiflorum, select root tubers with stems, air-dry them in a ventilated place, and then plant them.
The medicinal efficacy and nutrition of Polygonum multiflorum are both very high. Its root tuber is used as medicine, which can calm the nerves, nourish the blood, activate collaterals, detoxify, and reduce swelling. Prepared Polygonum multiflorum can tonify essence and blood, darken beard and hair, strengthen tendons and bones, and tonify the liver and kidneys. It is a common precious and fine Chinese medicinal material.
The planting methods of Polygonum multiflorum include seed propagation and cutting seedling raising, layering propagation, division propagation, etc. The time for each method is different. This article introduces the specific planting methods of Polygonum multiflorum, as well as the planting time corresponding to each method.
I. Land selection and land preparation
When planting on hillsides or scattered land in front of and behind houses, choose sandy soil with good drainage and loose fertility. During land preparation, apply 30000kg of farmyard manure per hectare, carry out deep plowing and leveling, and also make a border with a width of 120cm-150cm.
II. Propagation time and methods
The propagation methods of Polygonum multiflorum can adopt methods such as seed propagation and cutting seedling raising, layering propagation, and division propagation.
1. Seed propagation
(1) In November of autumn, when harvesting the vines, first collect the seeds, dry them in the sun, and place them in a ventilated and dry place.
(2) Sow from early March to early July of the following year. Along the border with a row spacing of 15cm-20cm, dig a ditch 3cm deep, evenly scatter the seeds into the ditch, cover with 1cm of soil, compact it, and water immediately.
(3) Seedlings emerge in about half a month. When the seedlings grow to 10cm-12cm, transplant or thin them, with a spacing of 15cm-20cm between each plant. The sowing rate per hectare is 22.5kg-30kg.
(4) When Polygonum multiflorum is propagated by seeds, its seedlings grow slowly. When the seedlings grow to more than 30cm, they begin to grow rapidly and the root tubers become thicker, but its growth cycle is slightly longer.
2. Cutting propagation
(1) In March-April each year or in the rainy season of August or in October of autumn, select relatively thick stems and vines, cut them into sections of 15cm-20cm. Note that each cutting must have more than two nodes, the upper node must have leaves, and the rest must not have leaves.
(2) In the prepared border, according to a row and plant spacing of 20cm×15cm, dig small pits of 5cm-10cm, insert the Polygonum multiflorum stems and vines into the small holes, compact them, and water.
(3) Polygonum multiflorum propagated by cuttings in spring and summer can grow new roots in about 10 days, while those inserted in autumn will take root in the following spring.
(4) Polygonum multiflorum propagated by cuttings takes root quickly, has a high survival rate, a short planting period, and produces many tubers. This method is generally used in production.
3. Layering propagation
In spring and summer, select thick branches near the ground for wave layering, bury them about 3cm at the covered place, and cut them off for planting after rooting.
4. Division propagation
When harvesting Polygonum multiflorum, select small root tubers or large root tubers with stems and cut them into several pieces respectively. Each piece must have 2-3 bud eyes. Then smear the cut with plant ash or place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry for 1-2 days. Wait until the cut has a healing layer before planting.
III. Planting
Plant in March-May. When planting, keep about 20cm of stem segment. Remove adventitious roots and small tuberous pieces together with the rest. The row spacing of each plant is 20cm-25cm, the hole spacing is 12cm-15cm, cover with 3cm of soil, compact and water. This can make Polygonum multiflorum high-yielding at harvest.
IV. Field management
1. Watering and drainage
Watering: In the first few days of sowing, supplement water more. Water once a day before germination, water once every three days after germination, and often keep the soil moist during the seedling stage. This is beneficial to the survival of the seedlings.
Drainage: After rain, water will accumulate in the field, and it should be drained in time.
2. Weeding and topdressing
(1) During the growth period, weed and topdress 2-3 times each year.
(2) From May to June in the early flowering stage, apply 750kg of cake fertilizer per hectare. From October to November, mainly apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, with 375kg of superphosphate and 375kg of potassium chloride per hectare.
3. Trellising and pruning
(1) After the planted seedlings survive, when the stems and vines grow to about 30cm, use branches, bamboo poles, etc. to put the vines on. It is also possible not to set up a trellis for the vines, and instead plant tall crops such as corn in the field.
(2) If the stems and vines spread on the ground and grow too vigorously, cut off part of the vines in July, which can ventilate and transmit light, and make the root tubers grow robustly.
(3) Each plant only needs to keep one vine. Excess branch seedlings should be cut off. When cutting to more than 1m, retain branches, which can help ventilation and light transmission in the lower layer of the plant. If the plant grows vigorously, properly top it.
(4) Field production requires pruning 5-6 times each year.
4. Flower removal
Except for plants that need to be kept for Polygonum multiflorum seeds, remove excess flower buds from May to June to prevent nutrient dispersion, thereby affecting the growth of root tubers.
