I. How to cultivate strawberry seedlings

1. Water and fertilizer management

(1) Watering

① Strawberries like sunlight and generally grow in loose, fertile, well-drained and sunny soil.

② The root system is relatively shallow, mainly distributed in the shallow soil layer of about 15-20cm. When summer temperatures are high, soil moisture evaporates easily and drought may occur, leading to drought stress or seedling death. At this time, strawberry seedlings should be watered thoroughly and appropriately in time to meet their basic needs.

③ However, never use flood irrigation all at once; it is best to choose furrow irrigation and moistening irrigation around evening.

(2) Fertilizing

After watering, topdress the strawberry seedlings. Before the peak growth period, apply quick-acting fertilizer, using diluted human manure and urine at 500kg/mu to pour and apply, or use 5.5kg/mu of urea diluted with an appropriate amount of water and mix it in for application, 3-4 times is enough.

2. Loosening soil and weeding

(1) During the seedling propagation period, frequently loosen the soil around the strawberry seedlings. Combined with intertillage weeding, this helps keep the soil loose, making it easier for runner plantlets to take root on the soil surface.

(2) For weed damage caused by excessive weeds, chemical herbicides can be sprayed. Before growth, use 48% trifluralin emulsifiable concentrate at 150-200ml/mu diluted in 40-50kg/mu of water; after dilution, spraying on the soil surface can be effective. For monocotyledonous weeds at the 3-5 leaf stage, use high-efficiency quizalofop for foliar control.

3. Removing leaves and buds

(1) After strawberry seedlings are planted and survive, when new leaves grow, remove leaves and buds in time, mainly removing dead leaves and flower buds on the mother plant. This can concentrate nutrients, reduce unnecessary loss, and thus promote the growth and development of roots and stems.

(2) To prevent excessive rampant growth of runners, pressed vines and stolons, spread them evenly to prevent crossing or overlapping that hinders growth. Use small clods of soil to press the stems where seedlings grow, which helps the root system grow deeper and become strong seedlings.

(3) To increase the number of runners and young seedlings of strawberry, spray the plant hormone gibberellin 920 during the vigorous growth period. Dissolve 1g of 920 original powder with an appropriate amount of alcohol, then dilute with 20kg of water. Be careful to spray evenly, and do not spray repeatedly or miss spots.

4. Pest and disease control

(1) Soil pests

They can be killed by drenching with 90% crystal trichlorfon 1000 times solution or 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate 1000 times solution.

(2) Aphids and red spider mites

They can be killed by spraying omethoate, imidacloprid, kexmanbao, chlorpyrifos, etc.

(2) Anthracnose, leaf spot disease

Before the vigorous growth period of strawberries or during the plum rain season, use 50% carbendazim wettable powder 500 times solution, 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder 1000 times solution, and 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder 800 times solution, alternating spraying 4-6 times for the best effect.

II. Precautions for cultivating strawberry seedlings

1. During the plum rain season, drain water from strawberry seedlings in time to avoid waterlogging; during the peak growth period of runners and the rooting period of daughter seedlings, water appropriately, keeping the soil alternately dry and wet; during the summer drought season, protect seedlings against drought and provide appropriate shading to prevent daughter seedlings from being scorched.

2. After thinning and temporary planting, raise seedlings in a greenhouse, and transplant daughter seedlings at the 3-4 leaf stage in batches to temporary planting seedbeds from late June to early August.

2. From late August to early September, carry out temporary planting for seedling cultivation. In addition, promptly remove new young seedlings that emerge after late August and after mid-September in open fields and in greenhouses.
