How to Grow Okra from Seed? Detailed Methods and Timing
SummaryOkra can be grown directly from seed, or started in nutrient pots. Direct sowing is generally done in early April, while greenhouse seedling raising can be done around March. The suitable temperature for seed germination is around 30°C. Because the seed coat is thick and rough, the seeds can first be soaked in warm water at around 30-35°C for about 10 hours, then removed, drained, and wrapped, and placed in an incubator at around 25-28°C for germination. When about 50% of the seeds have sprouted white, they can be sown.
I. Okra seedling raising methods and timing
1. Okra seeds can be sown directly into the soil, or raised in nutrient pots. Direct sowing is generally done in early April, while greenhouse seedling raising is done around March.
2. The suitable temperature for seed germination is around 30°C. If the temperature is below 12°C, seed germination will be delayed. In cold and damp soil, seeds will germinate slowly or even fail to germinate, so germination prompting is necessary.
3. Because the seed coat is relatively thick and rough, the seeds should be treated before sowing. During this time, they can be soaked in warm water at 30-35°C for about 10 hours, then removed and drained, wrapped, and placed in an incubator at 25-28°C for germination. After waiting about 2 days, when the rate of seeds sprouting white is 50%, they can be sown.
II. Seedling raising and transplanting methods
1. In northern regions, seeds can be sown in March, early to mid-month, in cold frames or solar greenhouses for seedling raising. The nutrient soil for the seedling bed is made by mixing 6 parts garden soil, 3 parts decomposed organic fertilizer, and 1 part fine sand.
2. Before sowing the seeds, soak them to promote germination, then level the seedling bed and sow them in holes at a spacing of 10cm between plants and rows, covering with soil 2cm thick.
3. After sowing, keep the seedling bed at around 25°C. After waiting 4-5 days, the seeds will germinate and emerge. The seedling age is 30-40 days. When the seedlings grow to 2-3 true leaves, transplant and set them out. It is suitable to use plastic pots, nutrient soil blocks, and other root-protecting seedling methods, which help cultivate strong seedlings of the right age.
4. Okra does not need watering during the seedling stage, otherwise it is easy to cause root and stem rot. During this period, the first irrigation can be appropriately delayed. Water the first time before okra flower buds appear, the second time during the flowering period, and the third time during the grain-filling period. Only 3 waterings are needed throughout the entire growth process.
III. Direct seed sowing methods
1. Okra seeds can be direct-sown in multiple rows. Before sowing, soak the seeds for about 12 hours, then remove and drain them, and place them at 25-30°C to promote germination. After waiting 1 day, once the seeds have germinated and the rate of sprouting white is about 60%, they can be sown.
2. Sowing can be done after the frost period ends. Before sowing, water the soil thoroughly, then sow in holes, with 3 plants per hole and a hole depth of 2-3cm. After sowing, cover with about 2cm of soil. For direct sowing, the seeding rate is about 10 kg per hectare, and for seedling transplanting, the seeding rate is about 3 kg per hectare.
