AbstractThe yield per mu of open-field eggplants is about 7500 jin, and the specific yield varies depending on the region, variety, and cultivation techniques. During the cultivation of open-field eggplants, it is necessary to manage water and fertilizer well and actively prevent and control pests and diseases so as not to affect the yield.

1. How many jin per mu do open-field eggplants yield

Eggplants include early-maturing varieties, mid-maturing varieties, and late-maturing varieties, and are also divided into round eggplant varieties and long strip-shaped eggplant varieties. The yield per mu of open-field eggplants varies according to the variety, generally about 7500 jin per mu. Of course, this yield is also related to cultivation techniques.

2. Cultivation methods for open-field eggplants

1. Raising seedlings and planting

(1) Autumn eggplants are best sown in May-June. Generally, varieties such as purple long eggplant can be used. For open-field seedling raising, seed soaking and germination promotion need to be carried out about 7 days in advance.

(2) For seed soaking, warm water at about 50°C can be used. Stir continuously in the warm water until the water temperature drops to about 30°C, then begin soaking the seeds for about 9 hours. After soaking, wrap the seeds well in a wet towel and place them under conditions above 30°C for germination promotion, washing the seeds at least twice a day.

(3) After 7 days, once half of the seeds have germinated, they can be sown. When the seedlings grow to 15 cm and have 8-10 leaves, they can be transplanted after about 30 days.

(4) Strong and well-growing seedlings should be selected for planting. The planting density should be about 50 cm. Planting at around 4 p.m. is best. After planting, water thoroughly, then water again the next day.

2. Reasonable water and fertilizer

(1) After successful planting and normal growth, fully decomposed farmyard manure should be applied as a topdressing immediately. The amount of fertilizer can be determined according to the specific area, or about 20 jin of compound fertilizer in total can be applied as a topdressing in each hole.

(2) When the eggplants begin to expand, in the initial expansion stage, about 1450-1550 kg of farmyard manure or about 30 jin of compound fertilizer in total per hole can be applied as a topdressing.

(3) During the fruit-setting and maturing stage, about 1950-2020 kg of farmyard manure or about 40 jin of compound fertilizer can be applied as a topdressing. In addition, eggplants have relatively large water requirements at every stage. During the sepal stage, the strong-fruit stage, and the final harvest stage, water needs to be flushed through once about 3 days before harvest, which helps the fruit expand and makes the peel bright and glossy.

3. Pruning and removing side branches

Eggplants have relatively strong regularity in flowering and fruiting at each stage, so the branches at each layer need to be retained. The open-center pruning method can be used to retain branches growing on the diagonal or horizontally at the opposite fork and cut off all the remaining branches.

After all the young eggplants have set firmly, all subsequently grown shoots need to be removed. The same applies after flowering. Regular topping and pinching are needed, which is more conducive to the eggplant absorbing nutrients, thereby promoting normal growth and development of the eggplant.

4. Disease prevention and control

Summer and autumn are periods of high incidence of pests and diseases, so prevention and control must be carried out in time. Weeding and hilling the soil can be combined with intertillage. At least two intertillages are needed, which can effectively eliminate weeds completely.

Common diseases include cotton blight, eggplant borers, and other pests and diseases, which can seriously affect eggplant yield and even cause total crop failure. Therefore, prevention and control must be carried out in time. Note that pesticide application needs to be stopped one week before harvest to prevent pesticide damage from harming the human body.

5. Harvest

Harvesting can be carried out when there is no white ring band at the junction between the sepal and the fruit. Early-maturing varieties can be harvested 20-25 days after flowering.
