Amazon Lily Growing Methods and Precautions
SummarySoil: Amazon lilies are suited to fertile, slightly acidic soil rich in humus. Planting: the planting period is August to September; place the bulbs into pots to plant, and after sprouting they can be divided into separate pots. Watering: in summer and autumn, water once in the morning and once in the evening; in spring and winter, water when the soil is relatively dry. Fertilizing: apply fertilizer about once every 2 months, but do not fertilize during the stem and root formation stage; during the flower bud growth stage, a small amount of potassium nitrate fertilizer may be applied. Temperature: the suitable growing temperature is 5°C-25°C.
I. Soil
Amazon lilies are suited to slightly acidic, fertile soil rich in humus. A mix of peat, coconut coir, perlite, garden soil, leaf mold and decomposed rice hulls can be used for growing.
II. Planting
The suitable planting period is August to September. The Amazon lily bulbs you buy can be placed into pots to plant, generally at a depth 3-4 times the diameter of the bulb, ensuring the roots and stems absorb sufficient nutrients; when the right temperature is reached, they will begin to sprout.
III. Division and Cultivation
Sprouted Amazon lilies generally produce many young plantlets. Keep only 3-5 in the growing pot; the others can be divided into separate pots. If all are planted in one pot, the resulting plants will lack nutrients and have insufficient growing space, so the number of flower buds produced will also be few.
IV. Watering
The surface layer of the potting soil for Amazon lilies should be kept moist, and watering should be done according to the soil condition. In summer and autumn, water once in the morning and once in the evening; in spring and winter, check the soil moisture content and water only when it is relatively dry.
V. Fertilizing
Amazon lilies are bulb-type flowers. It is recommended to apply fertilizer about once every 60 days; do not fertilize once the stem and root formation stage begins.
VI. Temperature
The suitable growing temperature for Amazon lilies is between 5°C-25°C. During growing, avoid direct strong light; a semi-shaded, ventilated environment can be chosen. In summer, provide shade; in spring and autumn, they can be placed outdoors to grow; in winter, prevent frost damage.
VII. Flowering Period
(1) Amazon lilies generally begin to put out flower buds in February, mainly depending on the weather; if it is hot, it will be March, and if it is cold, it will be April to May. The buds take about 30 days to grow before flowering. High-quality plants can produce 5 flowers, while poor varieties may not flower at all.
(2) Therefore, during the flower bud growth period, a small amount of potassium nitrate fertilizer can be applied as a top dressing to provide the nutrients the plant needs. The flowering period of the Amazon lily is relatively short, only about 15 days. After the flowers fade, the leaves begin to wither and the plant enters a dormant period, and around September it begins to sprout again.
VIII. Diseases
Potted plants generally suffer from relatively few diseases. Common diseases in greenhouse cultivation mainly include bulb and scale rot and damping-off, which can cause the plants to dry up and buds to drop.
