SummaryThere are many varieties of loofah, and it can be planted all year round, but you need to choose a high-quality variety suited to your local area. Spring: generally planted after Qingming Festival. Summer: generally planted in May-June, and can be marketed from July to October. Autumn: plant as soon as the previous season's harvest is fully complete. Winter: generally planted starting in November; because winter temperatures are relatively low, greenhouse cultivation is required.

I. When is loofah generally planted?

1. Spring: loofah is generally planted after Qingming Festival in spring; because temperatures rise relatively quickly in the south, planting can begin around the start of spring.

2. Summer: loofah is generally planted in May-June in summer, and can be marketed and sold around July-October. The planting time can be chosen according to market conditions, but note that summer temperatures are relatively high, so loofah varieties with relatively good heat tolerance should be chosen, such as Xianhua loofah.

3. Autumn: loofah can generally be sown as soon as the autumn harvest is fully complete; varieties suitable for autumn planting include Qingpi loofah, Guayouleng loofah, and so on.

4. Winter: loofah is generally planted starting in November in winter; winter temperatures are relatively low, so loofah is generally grown in greenhouse tunnels, and light and temperature must be well controlled, as this is beneficial to loofah growth.

II. Loofah Cultivation Techniques

1. Choosing a variety

(1) There are relatively many types of loofah, and a suitable loofah variety can be chosen for planting according to local conditions.

(2) For loofah grown in greenhouse tunnels, which suits low temperatures and little light, snake gourd loofah can be chosen. For loofah grown in the north, varieties with relatively strong growth ability should be chosen, such as bang loofah; in the south, where temperatures are relatively warm, varieties with good heat tolerance should be chosen, such as Xianhua loofah.

2. Seed soaking and sprouting

(1) Seed soaking and disinfection: before sowing, loofah seeds need to be placed in the sun to dry for about 2-3 days, then soaked in trisodium phosphate for disinfection for about 15 minutes, then placed in warm water at about 70°C, stirring the seeds, and once the water temperature drops to 25°C, soak for about 5 hours.

(2) Sprouting: place the disinfected seeds in a place at about 30°C to sprout, rinse them with water every day, and sow once the seeds show white.

3. Sowing

The survival rate of transplanted loofah is relatively low, so it is generally fine to sow directly; place 3 seeds per hole at a depth of about 2 cm, and after sowing, cover with soil, water, and finally cover with a layer of dry grass to retain moisture.

4. Field management

About 5 days after sowing, seedlings will emerge; the temperature needs to be lowered appropriately, watering should be done regularly according to soil conditions, and pests and diseases should be prevented and controlled in time later on, and so on.
