How to Plant Pinellia? These Planting Secrets You Need to Know
SummaryPinellia is generally sown in spring from February to April. A hotbed can be used to sprout the seed tubers, with the sprouting temperature kept at around 20°C. When the bud sheaths turn white, transplant them. Before transplanting, the soil needs to be watered thoroughly, then the seed tubers with buds are transplanted into the plowed soil. For base fertilizer and top dressing, farmyard manure can be applied. It can also be intercropped between rows of young fruit trees. After the plants bolt and flower, the flower buds should be removed in batches. In the later stage, sodium sulfite solution can be sprayed to delay the plants' dieback.
1. Pre-sowing sprouting, mulching film during seedling stage
1. Pinellia is generally sown in spring from February to April. Because spring temperatures are relatively low, seed tuber germination will slow down. Therefore, before sowing, seed tubers can be sprouted indoors in a hotbed. The suitable sprouting temperature is around 20°C, and after waiting 15 days, they will sprout.
2. Outdoor sprouting can also be chosen. Place the seed tubers in a plastic greenhouse at 20-25°C, then after waiting 15 days, when the bud sheaths are found to have turned white, plant the seed tubers with buds into the plowed soil, then cover with plastic film. The plastic film only needs to cover between the rows where the seed tubers are planted, and it can be removed once the seedlings have grown evenly.
2. Timely drainage and irrigation, timely top dressing
1. Pinellia likes moisture and is tolerant of fertilizer, but fears waterlogging. Before planting, the planting site needs to be watered thoroughly, which helps seedling emergence. During the seedling growth stage, the soil should be kept moist. In dry weather, irrigate in time. During the rainy season, do a good job of drainage to avoid excessive water accumulation in the field causing seedling death.
2. Mainly apply farmyard manure. In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer at planting, during the growth of Pinellia, top dressing is also needed 2 times. The 1st top dressing is carried out from late May to early June. When tender buds grow on the inner side of the lower end of the petiole, apply 50 jin of decomposed cake fertilizer and 4000 jin of decomposed human and livestock manure between the rows per mu.
3. Choose intercropping with tall-stem crops
Pinellia is a relatively shade-tolerant crop. Under shaded conditions, it can grow robustly and have high yield. Therefore, the planting site should be chosen on gently sloping land with half shade and half sun. It can also be intercropped between rows of young fruit trees, and wheat, corn and other tall-stem crops can also be planted between Pinellia beds.
4. Remove flower buds
About 60 days after planting Pinellia, the plants will gradually bolt and flower, and this will consume a large amount of nutrients. Therefore, in addition to retaining seeds, the flower buds also need to be removed in batches in time, so as to promote the concentrated transport of nutrients to the underground tubers, which helps accelerate tuber growth and increase yield.
5. Delay plant dieback
When Pinellia encounters high temperature and strong light, dieback will occur and growth will pause. Therefore, delaying plant dieback is the key to high yield of Pinellia. According to relevant production experience, during the planting period, in addition to taking appropriate shading and sprinkler irrigation measures to reduce light intensity and temperature, 0.01% sodium sulfite solution can also be sprayed in an appropriate amount, which helps weaken the intensity of plant respiration, thereby delaying the number of plant diebacks and achieving the goal of high quality and high yield.
