Detailed Guide to Ginger Planting Methods and Timing
SummaryPlanting methods: You can choose highly permeable sandy soil, soak the ginger pieces for disinfection, then plant them at a spacing of 30cm between plants and 40cm between rows. For base fertilizer, you can apply potassium fertilizer and organic decomposed manure; for topdressing, you can apply urea, potassium fertilizer, compound fertilizer, etc. Pay attention to preventing and controlling pests and diseases. The harvest time is from November to December. Planting time: In Hunan and Wuhan and other regions, the suitable planting time is from April to May, while in the river valley areas of the northwest and southwest, the suitable planting time is March.
1. Planting Time
The specific planting time for ginger is determined by temperature. In Hunan, Wuhan and other regions, ginger is planted from April to May each year, while in the river valley areas of the northwest and southwest, planting has already begun in March. The suitable growing temperature for ginger is around 25-30°C, and the lowest temperature must not be below 15°C. Therefore, you can determine the planting time according to local temperature changes.
2. Site Selection and Seed Selection
1. Ginger is relatively sensitive to water, and its drought resistance and waterlogging resistance are also poor. Therefore, when choosing a site, you need to choose highly permeable sandy soil, and it should also be close to a water source, which makes later irrigation and drainage more convenient.
2. For seed selection, choose healthy ginger pieces with relatively strong tubers and good color, and also carefully observe whether the ginger buds are vigorous. It is sufficient if they have not shown signs of withering during this period.
3. Sowing and Density
1. Before sowing, soak the ginger pieces in a chemical agent for about ten minutes, then take them out, mix them evenly with sand, place them in a clean place, seal them with plastic film, and sow after about 5 days.
2. When sowing, you can sow at a spacing of 30cm per plant and 40cm per row, then place the sprouted part facing upward into the soil pit as much as possible. After arranging them neatly, cover with a small amount of thin soil and spread a layer of straw on top.
4. Base Fertilizer and Topdressing
1. When planting, you can apply 60 jin of potassium fertilizer and organic decomposed manure per mu. When the seedlings grow to 25cm tall, irrigate with manure diluted in water, or spray with 40 jin of urea diluted in water.
2. In early September of autumn, to promote tuber enlargement, you can apply 60 jin of potassium fertilizer and 90 jin of compound fertilizer per mu. Finally, when the tubers have grown to about the size of 3 thumbs, you can apply 30 jin of potassium fertilizer and 45 jin of compound fertilizer per mu.
5. Pest and Disease Control
1. Ginger borers and ginger maggots: You can use trichlorfon and phoxim for foliar spraying control.
2. Leaf spot disease: You can spray 800-fold dilution of 50% chlorothalonil once every 7-10 days.
3. Soft rot: During the peak incidence period from July to September, if diseased plants are found, remove them as early as possible, and dig away the soil around the plants to prevent bacterial infection, then sprinkle a small amount of lime and fill the ground level with soil.
6. Harvesting
You can choose to harvest from November to December. During this period, the stems and leaves of ginger turn yellow and show signs of withering, which indicates that it can be harvested. If you want a better taste, you can harvest once every 2 years.
