Key Points and Management Requirements for Growing Pole Beans
SummaryPole beans are best planted in well-drained, loose and fertile soil. The base fertilizer can include chemical fertilizer and farmyard manure. Before planting, soak and disinfect the seeds first, then sow at a row spacing of 40cm, a plant spacing of 30cm, and a density of 3 seeds per hole. During the seedling stage, control water and fertilizer; during the vine-drawing stage, apply 1 round of fertilizer and watering together with intertillage; during the flowering and fruiting stage, apply fertilizer together with irrigation; when the vines begin to sprawl, use bamboo poles to set up trellises and guide the vines, and carry out pest and disease control work throughout.
I. Land Preparation and Bed Making
When planting pole beans, choose well-drained, loose and fertile soil. Before preparing the land, apply base fertilizer first; the base fertilizer can include fully decomposed farmyard manure as well as a small amount of chemical fertilizer, then deeply plow the soil, level it, and make beds. Plant according to a bed width of 1.2m, a bed height of 6cm, and a bed spacing of 70cm.
II. Planting Specifications
First soak the seeds in diluted disinfectant solution for 2-3 hours to help kill residual pathogens, then rinse them clean with water before sowing. Generally, two rows can be sown per bed, with a row spacing of 40cm and a plant spacing of 30cm, placing 3 seeds per hole. If the temperature is relatively low at sowing time, cover with plastic film to keep warm.
III. Fertilization and Irrigation
1. During the seedling growth stage of pole beans, excessive fertilizer and water can easily lead to root rot, so water and fertilizer must be controlled during the seedling stage. When pole beans enter the vine-drawing stage, apply fertilizer and water once together with intertillage, which helps promote vine growth and flower bud differentiation.
2. When pole beans enter the flowering and fruiting stage, they need sufficient water and nutrients. Usually at this stage, fertilizer can be applied together with irrigation, and after pole beans flower and enter the pod-setting stage, nutrient consumption is very rapid.
3. Therefore, at this stage, keep the soil moist, and also apply less nitrogen fertilizer, or alternatively choose to spray trace elements such as iron and zinc to promptly supplement the nutrients needed by the leaves. When pole beans enter the late growth stage, if the plants have not aged prematurely, appropriately apply 1-2 additional fertilizer applications, which helps promote the pole bean plants to produce new flowers, extend the harvest period, and increase yield.
IV. Building Supports
When pole beans begin to sprawl their vines, bamboo poles can be used to build supports. The bamboo poles can be arranged in a chevron shape, and supports can be built together to guide the vines, encouraging the pole bean vines to grow upward along the poles.
V. Pest and Disease Control
Throughout the entire growth stage of pole beans, the main pests and diseases include spider mites, rust disease, gray mold, root rot, pod borers, and so on. During this period, spray promptly at the early stage of pest and disease occurrence to prevent the spread of pathogens, and also spray for control during the peak period of pest and disease occurrence, which helps improve the quality and yield of pole beans.
