How to plant tree roses? A detailed explanation of the planting method
SummaryTree roses are suitable for planting in fertile plots with good drainage and irrigation, convenient transportation, and shelter from the wind and facing the sun. Select robust tree roses with a high cutting survival rate to use as rootstock, insert the cuttings into a sand bed in spring from April to May, and keep the temperature at 22-26°C. During this period, water according to the soil's dryness and moisture. After rooting, transplant them into flower pots or the field. In the later stage, keep 1 robust branch as the trunk and prune off all the rest.
1. Choosing the plot
Choose to plant in a fertile plot with good drainage and irrigation, convenient transportation, and shelter from the wind and facing the sun. Loam or sandy loam is suitable. In the winter of the previous year, plow the soil deeply once, which helps freeze to death pests, pathogens, and so on in the soil.
2. Cultivating the rootstock
Select tree roses with strong resistance, robust growth, good uprightness, well-developed roots, and a high cutting survival rate to use as rootstock. At present, the more widely used rootstock is wild rose. You can choose thornless multiflora rose or pink cluster rose. The rootstock cuttings can be taken in spring from April to May, while greenhouse cuttings can be done at any time.
3. Preparing the seedbed
The cutting nursery site should be chosen in a place with fertile soil, convenient water access, and flat terrain. After deeply plowing the soil, apply an appropriate amount of sheep manure fertilizer. After leveling the land, spread river sand over the soil. The sand layer thickness is 3-5cm. The sand bed can be sterilized with 0.1% carbendazim. The bed surface width is about 1.5 meters and the length is about 5 meters. After the sand bed is made, build a small plastic arched shed with a top height of about 1 meter, and then build a shade shed on top, with a height of 1.8 meters or more as suitable.
4. Cutting the cuttings
Generally, the cut length of the cuttings is 10cm. When cutting, keep only 1-2 leaves on the cuttings. Cut the top of the cutting into a flat opening and the lower part into a slanted opening. The cut is suitably several millimeters away from the axillary bud.
5. Cutting process
Before cutting, water the sand bed first to make it moist. When cutting, use a small wooden stick to make holes in the sand bed, then insert the cuttings into the holes. The diameter of the small holes should be larger than the diameter of the cut end of the cuttings. The suitable cutting depth is about 3cm, and the density is 10cm×15cm. After cutting, press the holes tightly to promote close contact between the river sand and the cuttings.
6. Post-cutting management
After cutting, try to keep the temperature at 22-26°C so that the air temperature is the same as the ground temperature. When the temperature rises, water on the shed or on the ground, or ventilate appropriately to cool down. In the early stage after cutting, water about once every 7-10 days. After rooting, when the water demand increases, water once every 3-5 days. During this period, open the plastic shed in the morning and evening for ventilation and light transmission, and gradually extend the ventilation and light transmission time to promote the seedlings' adaptation to the external environment.
7. Transplanting the seedlings
Transplant the seedlings that have already rooted into flower pots or the field, and plant them at a spacing of 30cm×40cm per plant.
8. Seedling stage management
When managing newly planted seedlings, be careful not to damage their root systems. In the winter of the first year, prune off all the branches above ground. After they sprout in the second year, choose a robust, upright branch and keep 1 as the trunk, and prune off all the other branches. In the spring of the third year, this trunk can be used as rootstock.
