A Detailed Guide to Cabbage Planting Methods and Timing
SummarySeed selection: Varieties can be chosen according to the climate of the planting area. Land preparation: Do not choose land that has been planted with the same crop in consecutive years; deep-plow the soil and apply base fertilizer. Sowing: The sowing method can be broadcasting or raising seedlings in a seedbed. Management: Water once every 3-5 days; the first fertilization should be done together with weeding, and the second fertilization should be done when the leaves curl. Disease control: Do a good job of preventing and controlling downy mildew and black root rot. Planting time: Spring in April or autumn in September can be chosen.
I. Cabbage Planting Methods
1. Seed selection
(1) Cabbage varieties include flat-head cabbage, round-head cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale and purple cabbage, etc.
(2) When choosing varieties, you can select suitable varieties according to the local climate of the planting area.
(3) Areas such as Hunan are more suitable for growing round-head cabbage, the Yangtze River basin is suitable for growing flat-head cabbage, and the dry northwest region is suitable for growing Brussels sprouts.
2. Land preparation
(1) Cabbage has very strong adaptability and has no special requirements for soil texture or soil.
(2) When choosing land, just try not to choose land that has been planted with the same crop in consecutive years, otherwise blast disease is very likely to occur.
(3) When preparing the land, note that field debris needs to be cleared away completely before plowing, and the plowing should be deep.
(4) While preparing the land, drainage preparations should also be made, digging a water ditch every one meter in the field.
(5) After land preparation is completed, about 1 kg of farmyard manure and about 50 kg of plant ash need to be spread per mu as base fertilizer.
3. Sowing
(1) The sowing method can use direct broadcasting or the method of raising seedlings in a seedbed.
(2) When broadcasting, sow according to a certain spacing, then cover the seeds well with fine soil and quietly wait for them to sprout.
(3) If raising seedlings in a seedbed, the seeds need to be evenly scattered on the seedbed, then covered with a thin layer of soil, and then covered with a layer of plastic film or dry grass on top to maintain soil temperature; transplant when the seedlings grow to 6-8 cm.
(4) When transplanting, the row spacing is about 40 cm and the plant spacing is about 35 cm.
4. Management
(1) After transplanting, water the plants, roughly once every 3-5 days.
(2) If the seedlings in the transplanted field do not survive for various reasons, the seedlings need to be filled in within 5-10 days.
(3) The first fertilization needs to be done together with weeding; in order to allow the seedlings to absorb nutrients better and reduce unnecessary consumption, the amount of fertilizer is about 100 jin of urea per mu.
(4) The second fertilization is done when the cabbage leaves curl, about 1000 jin of farmyard manure, 50 jin of potassium fertilizer, 50 jin of compound fertilizer and 30 jin of phosphate fertilizer per mu.
(5) If the cabbage is relatively loose when heading, it needs to be tied with straw.
5. Disease control
(1) Common diseases include downy mildew and black root rot. Downy mildew affects the growth of cabbage leaves and forms mildew-like spots on the leaf surface; in severe cases it causes the leaves to wither.
(2) To control downy mildew, chlorothalonil is generally used, sprayed once every 5-6 days.
(3) Black root rot is generally controlled before planting; when preparing the land, quicklime needs to be mixed with soil for disinfection before planting, which can effectively prevent the occurrence of black root rot.
II. Cabbage Planting Time
1. The planting time of cabbage is determined by different regions and different climates; the planting season is generally spring in April or autumn around September.
2. According to different planting times, there are spring cabbage, summer cabbage, autumn cabbage and winter cabbage on the market.
3. The temperature suitable for cabbage growth is 20-28 degrees; cabbage planted at this temperature has high yield and good quality.
