Cultivation Methods and Daily Care Tips for the Orchid Cactus
Summary Soil: A fertile, loose, well-drained neutral or slightly acidic sandy loam is suitable. Light: It likes warm sunlight, but not direct strong light; move it indoors to a sunny spot in winter. Humidity: Maintain air humidity in spring and summer. Temperature: The temperature must not fall below 10°C. Support: Use thin bamboo stakes as supports and spread the stems and leaves over the support. Fertilizing: Apply 1 application of decomposed dilute cake fertilizer water every 15-20 days. Pests and diseases: Prevent stem rot, brown spot disease, and root-knot nematodes, etc.
1. Choosing Soil
The orchid cactus likes to grow in a moist environment, so it is suitable to cultivate it in a fertile, loose, well-drained neutral or slightly acidic sandy loam.
2. Sufficient Light
1. The orchid cactus likes to grow in warm sunlight, but not direct strong light. Generally, it can be placed in a sunny spot outdoors for care. In winter, move it indoors to a spot with plenty of sunlight. In summer, it can be placed in a ventilated, semi-shaded spot, and direct sunlight should be avoided during this period.
2. It should not be exposed to rain, otherwise the stems may turn yellow or even wilt. If it is kept in a shaded place for a long time, flower bud differentiation will be affected. If it grows in an unventilated environment, pests and diseases are likely to occur.
3. Maintaining Humidity
In spring and summer, water can be sprayed on the plant regularly, and the area around the flower pot can also be sprayed. This helps increase air humidity and promotes plant growth and flowering.
4. Suitable Temperature
The orchid cactus is not tolerant of severe cold. In northern regions, in mid-to-late October, it can be kept in a spot with relatively sufficient sunlight. From November to March of the following year, the temperature should be maintained at 10-15°C; from March to June, it should be maintained at 13-18°C; from June to November, it should be maintained at 20-25°C. In summer, proper ventilation, cooling, and shading should be provided.
5. Building a Support
Because the stems and leaves of the orchid cactus are relatively soft, thin bamboo stakes are needed as supports. Generally, an oval support can be tied, and then the stems and leaves are evenly and neatly distributed over the support and tied securely with string. This can prevent breakage and also help with ventilation and light penetration, promoting a balanced and attractive plant shape.
6. Reasonable Fertilizing
During the growing season of the orchid cactus, apply 1 application of decomposed dilute cake fertilizer water every 15-20 days. After the Spring Festival, change to applying liquid fertilizer once every 10 days. During this period, promptly prune overly vigorous side shoots and buds sprouting from the base, which helps reduce nutrient consumption and maintain an attractive plant shape. During the bud stage, 1-2 additional applications of quick-acting phosphorus fertilizer can be given, which helps promote large flowers and vivid colors.
7. Preventing and Controlling Pests and Diseases
The orchid cactus is prone to stem rot, brown spot disease, and root-knot nematodes. If stem rot or brown spot disease occurs, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim wettable powder. For root-knot nematodes, drench with a 1000-fold dilution of 80% dichloropropane emulsifiable concentrate. In addition, if ventilation is poor, aphids, scale insects, and red spider mites are likely to appear, and they can generally be killed by spraying with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% fenitrothion emulsifiable concentrate.
8. Repotting at the Right Time
1. The orchid cactus needs repotting about once every 2 years. Repotting can generally be done in spring and autumn. Organic sandy soil can be used as the potting soil. When repotting, remove part of the old soil and dead roots, then add fresh growing medium. Generally, mix 4 parts leaf mold, 3 parts garden soil, 1 part compost soil, and 1 part sandy soil, and add an appropriate amount of bone meal as a base fertilizer.
2. After repotting, the orchid cactus can be grown under scattered sunlight. In summer, shading should be provided to prevent harm to the leaves from excessive light intensity. On rainy days, move it indoors for care. After the Beginning of Autumn, it can receive full light; otherwise, insufficient light will make it difficult for it to bloom.
