Planting techniques: Use a knife to cut off small clumps of water bamboo roots as seedlings, plant them in paddy fields or shallow ponds, and use farmyard manure or organic fertilizer as base fertilizer. During the growing period, ensure sufficient water; in the later stage, fertilize according to the growth of the water bamboo, and promptly weed and control pests and diseases.

I. Planting Time

There are many varieties of water bamboo, mainly divided into two types: double-cropping water bamboo and single-cropping water bamboo. In southern regions, double-cropping water bamboo is generally planted from November to before the end of April, or from June to August, and harvested in autumn. Planting should be completed by the end of April at the latest, or by August. Single-cropping water bamboo is generally planted in spring, forms shoots under short-day conditions in autumn, and is harvested in the eighth lunar month.

II. Seed Selection and Seedling Raising

1. You can choose late-maturing, high-yielding double-cropping varieties to plant, or choose early-market, high-yielding single-cropping varieties to plant, mainly based on market conditions and the local environment. Because water bamboo reproduces asexually, there is no conventional method of sowing and raising seedlings.

2. Generally, old water bamboo clumps are divided and planted. During this period, select clumps that are robust, disease-free, and free of male plants, and use a knife to cut small clumps of muddy water bamboo roots as seedlings. About 1000 can be planted per mu.

III. Land Preparation

You can choose to plant in paddy fields or shallow ponds, then plow the soil deeply and expose it to the sun until it turns white, and rough-plow it to make it loose. Water bamboo requires a large amount of fertilizer during growth, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied at planting time. Organic fertilizer or farmyard manure can be used as base fertilizer; chemical fertilizer should not be applied. After fertilizing, plow the soil deeply again to mix the soil and fertilizer evenly, then irrigate and rake level, and reinforce and raise the field ridges. During this period, the irrigation water height should not exceed 20cm.

IV. Transplanting

Transplanting is generally carried out from October to November, mainly in row planting, with a row spacing of 0.8-1 m and a plant spacing of 0.5-0.6 m. Pay attention to the planting depth; planting too deep will lead to poor tillering. Generally, insert the old stems and the base of the water bamboo seedlings into the mud so that they do not float up.

V. Field Management

1. Water: Water bamboo has different water requirements at each growth stage. Water demand is relatively small in the early growth stage, greater during the peak growth period, during which sufficient water must be ensured, and then gradually decreases in the later growth stage.

2. Topdressing: This depends on the growth of the water bamboo. When fertilizing, do not apply fertilizer directly under the water bamboo seedlings; keep a distance of 2-3cm from the seedlings to avoid fertilizer burn caused by excessive concentration.

3. Weeding: During the growth of water bamboo, weeds should also be removed promptly, which helps improve soil permeability and avoid nutrient consumption. Generally, weeding can be carried out 2-3 times.

4. Pest and disease control: Common diseases of water bamboo include leaf blight and rust, and pests include leafhoppers and aphids. When pests and diseases occur, timely control should be carried out.
