How to propagate the Portulaca grandiflora? Detailed Guide to Common Propagation Methods
1. Sowing method
(1) Timing control: If this method is used for propagation, then March to April is more suitable. Because this is spring, the period when all things revive, and the temperature is more suitable, which is the primary factor we consider.
(2) Choosing a container: This step refers to sowing in flower pots and other containers. If sowing in the open ground, then it is a matter of choosing the sowing site.
(3) Choosing the substrate (soil): When choosing, we must consider various factors, such as whether the soil's drainage is good enough, whether its aeration is good, and so on. Moreover, in order to provide enough nutrients for the seeds, we can mix some barnyard manure or compost into the soil, which can effectively increase the success rate of sowing.
(4) Seed treatment: Soak the harvested seeds in warm water for a while. This is not a mandatory step. However, if this step is carried out, it can make the seeds germinate earlier.
(5) Formal sowing: Scatter the seeds in the container or on the soil at the sowing site, try to spread them evenly, and then cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep temperature and humidity at optimal conditions. If the seeds have not been treated, they will sprout in one week to ten days; if they have been treated, the seeds will sprout earlier.
(6) Transplanting: Around mid-June, the seedlings will be able to grow tall enough for transplanting.
2. Other methods
Besides the sowing method, other methods are occasionally used, and they will not be introduced in detail here.
