Detailed Explanation of Borage Propagation Methods and Key Operational Points
1. Seed propagation
(1) Time selection: This plant can generally be propagated by seed, or by raising seedlings and then transplanting them. If the open-field cultivation method is adopted, then we generally choose to carry it out in spring, mainly considering that the temperature during this period is relatively suitable. If the protected cultivation method is used, then it can be carried out throughout the entire year according to specific needs.
(2) Seed collection and treatment: Choose a sunny afternoon for harvesting. Spread several sheets of paper under the tree, then just shake the trunk. Because the seeds of this plant are small nuts, and their outer coat is very hard, special treatment must be given before formal sowing: soak them in warm water for one to two days, and change the water every day. In this way, seedlings will emerge faster and also more uniformly.
(3) Sowing: Use the "dibbling" method to sow the treated seeds, scattering them on the already prepared sowing site. Putting three or four seeds in each hole is enough; do not use too many. After sowing, a layer of fine soil needs to be covered over them. The soil layer should not be too thick; about two to three cm is enough.
(4) Points for attention: If sowing is carried out in March or April, then by about May the seeds can basically emerge and grow several leaves. At this time, in order to promote the plant's growth and development as well as branching, we can apply fertilizer two or three times to encourage it. In addition, when it grows to around 20 cm, we need to perform "pinching" treatment on it.
2. Other methods
Sowing is the most commonly used method. Although other methods also exist, they are very rare, so they will not be introduced here for now.
