Is the Florist's Gerbera the same as the Sunflower? A detailed explanation of the differences between the two

Because the Florist's Gerbera has an alias called the Sunflower, some flower lovers get confused and cannot tell them apart. So are these two flowers the same? Next, we will answer for you whether they are actually the same flower.

I. Taxonomic affiliation:

The Florist's Gerbera and the Sunflower both belong to the Asteraceae family, but the Florist's Gerbera belongs to the genus Gerbera, while the Sunflower belongs to the genus Helianthus. From this alone, you can already see that these two flowers are not the same.

II. Place of origin:

The Florist's Gerbera originated in the south, and was later introduced into the United Kingdom. It is now also cultivated in China. The Sunflower, however, originated in South America and was brought to Europe through introduction by Spain.

III. Growing environment:

1 For the Florist's Gerbera, its temperature requirements are a bit higher than those of the Sunflower. During the day it needs a temperature of 20 to 25 degrees, and at night it must be maintained at around 16 degrees. To make it bloom, the ambient temperature must not be lower than 15 degrees.

In winter, when the temperature is lower than 7 degrees, it will stop growing, and being under zero-degree conditions for too long may even threaten its life.

2 The Sunflower is rather easygoing. As long as the temperature is higher than 10 degrees, it can grow normally, and the higher the temperature, the faster it develops.

IV. Appearance:

1 Florist's Gerbera: When this flower blooms during its flowering period, its diameter reaches 6 to 10 cm. Its receptacle is flat in shape and directly exposed on the outside, with a diameter that can reach 6 to 8 mm in length. Around the outside there are two layers of male flowers, and the outer corolla is tongue-shaped, about 2.5 to 3.5 cm long and 2 to 4 mm wide.

2 Sunflower: When this flower blooms during its flowering period, its diameter can reach 10 to 30 cm, which is very large. The size of its flower can be said to be 1 to 5 times that of the Florist's Gerbera.
