A Detailed Guide to the Planting Methods and Timing of Long Chili Peppers
SummaryPlanting time: the suitable planting time is from March to July. Soil selection and land preparation: the suitable soil for planting is neutral or weakly alkaline. Sowing and raising seedlings: the seeds can be soaked in diluted potassium permanganate for sterilization, and when the seedlings grow to about 5cm, they are transplanted. Transplanting management: the suitable spacing is 30-45cm, and the row spacing is 50-60cm. Pest and disease control: agents such as agricultural streptomycin, Duoxiaoqing, and Dupont Fuxing can be used for control.
I. Planting Time
1. Long chili peppers like heat and are relatively suited to growing in a mild climate with plenty of sunlight, so the planting time needs to be determined according to the local climate. For example, in the Guangdong region, the temperature is relatively high throughout the year, so they can be planted at any time.
2. In other regions, the suitable planting time is from March to July. At this time, both the temperature and light are suitable for the growth of long chili peppers. Early sowing allows them to grow well and produce more fruit.
II. Soil Selection and Land Preparation
1. The root system of long chili peppers is relatively weak, so the planting soil needs to have good conditions. Generally, a sunny area or a gently sloping area with sufficient light can be chosen. With sufficient light, the long chili peppers grown are larger and taste better. During this period, they must not be planted in places without light for a long time.
2. The suitable soil for planting is neutral or weakly alkaline. If the soil is relatively acidic, lime powder can be used to adjust it; if it is relatively alkaline, coal cinder can be added to adjust it.
III. Sowing and Raising Seedlings
1. Before sowing, the seeds must be treated. First, put the seeds in the sun for 2 days. This can not only increase the germination rate of the seeds, but also kill the pathogens carried by the seeds. Alternatively, soak them in diluted potassium permanganate for sterilization, then soak them in warm water for about 12 hours.
2. Evenly scatter the seeds on the seedbed, cover with about 1cm of soil, spray water to moisten the soil, and keep the temperature at about 25-28°C. After about 7 days, they will germinate and emerge. When the seedlings grow to 5cm, they can be transplanted.
IV. Transplanting Management
1. The root system of long chili peppers is relatively weak. When transplanting, furrow planting or flat planting is suitable. Just after transplanting, they should not be buried deeply; a shallow soil cover is enough, and soil can be gradually banked up as they grow. Long chili peppers have a compact plant type and can be planted densely during this period. Generally, the plant spacing is 30-45cm, and the row spacing is 50-60cm.
2. The growth of long chili peppers cannot be separated from water. With sufficient water, the fruit grown is thick-fleshed and juicy, so frequent watering is needed to keep the soil moist at all times, but it should not be too wet, otherwise it is easy to cause root rot in the plants. When watering, fungicides can be added regularly.
V. Pest and Disease Control
1. Common pests and diseases of long chili peppers include bacterial wilt and powdery mildew. Usually, for the control of bacterial wilt, disease-resistant varieties must first be selected. In the early stage of the disease, 100-200ppm agricultural streptomycin diluted with water is sprayed on the soil. It can be sprayed continuously 3 times, with root irrigation every 10-15 days, for 2-3 consecutive times.
2. For the control of powdery mildew, disease-resistant varieties with good resistance must first be selected. Before planting, spray and disinfect with 800-fold diluted Xin Gao Zhi Mo. In the early stage of the disease, 1000-fold diluted Duoxiaoqing plus 3000-fold diluted Dupont Fuxing can be sprayed for control.
