Precautions: after the flowers fade, promptly prune off spent flowers, diseased branches, damaged branches and leggy branches; generally repot once every 2-3 years.

1. Environment

Azaleas can be grown in both indoor and outdoor environments. In winter, keep them indoors in a spot with plenty of light and good ventilation; in the other seasons, keep them outdoors. A muddy ground is more suitable, the site should be as spacious as possible, and appropriate shading should be provided.

2. Potting soil

Azaleas like to grow in loose soil with good drainage and permeability, with a pH of 5-6. Try not to use clay or alkaline soil for planting, especially for the Satsuki azalea and Western azalea varieties, which can only be planted in mountain soil.

3. Flower pot

1. Azaleas are generally planted in clay pots and purple clay pots. Clay pots have relatively good air permeability and water permeability, and most azaleas kept outdoors use this kind of pot.

2. For mature azaleas, especially those that have already been shaped, a beautiful and elegant purple clay pot is generally chosen for growing them. Purple clay pots have a fine texture, rich colors and beautiful shapes, which can increase their ornamental value.

4. Watering

It is suitable to water azaleas with rainwater, river water or pond water, but most households now use tap water. Generally, tap water can be left to stand for 1-2 days to let the chlorine evaporate before watering. A small amount of ferrous sulfate can be added when watering; during the growing season, water once every 7-10 days. Regular use of ferrous sulfate can keep the soil acidic.

5. Precautions

1. Azaleas are afraid of dryness and of waterlogging, and are afraid of heavy fertilizer. The roots of azaleas are as fine as hair, with relatively few thick ones. Therefore, if watered too much, the root system will soak in water; if watered too little, the branches and leaves will shrivel; and if fertilized too much, fertilizer burn will be severe.

2. The placement of azaleas is rather particular. They are generally placed on a southeast-facing balcony, and need frequent ventilation and little moving. Without good ventilation, they easily suffer from black spot disease, with large numbers of leaves dropping.

3. After the azalea flowers fade, the spent flowers need to be pruned promptly. Diseased branches, damaged branches and leggy branches can also be cut off to avoid consuming too many nutrients. At the same time, clean up the spent flowers and fallen leaves on the surface of the potting soil. After new branches sprout, buds and leaves need to be thinned promptly, then part of the overly dense buds and branches and leaves should be cut off, which helps ensure air circulation.

4. Azaleas grow relatively slowly and do not need repotting every year; generally once every 2-3 years is enough. When repotting, be careful not to damage the roots. The time for changing the soil is after the flowers fade or in autumn. After changing the soil, a thiophanate solution can be sprayed to prevent pests and diseases.

5. When the weather turns warm, flower lovers will move azaleas outdoors or to a balcony to grow them. From being brought out of the room to flowering, they need to see plenty of sunlight; during the flowering stage, short-term shading is needed, with a shading level of 40%.
