In summer, loofah is absolutely indispensable on the dining table, and as a summer vegetable it is also widely grown in our country. So what are the precautions for growing loofah?

1. What are the precautions for growing loofah?

1. Choosing the site and seeds

Although loofah is a vegetable crop with strong adaptability and no strict requirements for soil, its yield is higher on loam and sandy loam with deep soil layers, high organic matter content, good air permeability, and strong water and fertilizer retention capacity. For loofah varieties, the excellent varieties best suited to the local area should be selected.

2. Land preparation and sowing

The best sowing time for loofah is from November to January-February of the following year; in some areas, sowing from June to September is also acceptable. Before sowing, deep furrows and high beds are also needed; the bed including the furrow is 1.6 m wide, the bed surface is 1.2 m wide, and base fertilizer is then applied according to the actual soil conditions.

3. Seedling stage management

When the loofah seedlings grow to 30-40 cm, trellises need to be set up in time. Use small bamboo poles about 1.5 to 2 m long to form an inverted-V shape, set up above the loofah seedlings. Let the vines lean on the trellis so they can climb upward along it. Note that when building the trellis, it must be firmly set up; while inserting the bamboo poles into the soil, you can also use a rope to hang a brick, which can prevent the wind from blowing the trellis over. In addition, a light fertilizer application is also needed once a week according to the situation.

4. Pest and disease control

When growing loofah, pests and diseases such as mosaic disease, viral disease, angular leaf spot, downy mildew, cutworms, red spider mites, small leaf roller worms, and cucumber borers must be prevented and controlled in advance.

5. Timely harvest

During the harvest season, water frequently and apply a fertilizer containing potassium once to increase the fruit-setting rate. When the loofah grows to about 40 cm, it can be harvested; timely harvesting can increase yield and improve quality.

In addition to the above points, during the loofah growing process, fertilization and drainage also need to be carried out according to the situation.
