How does calla lily overwinter?
Calla lily is also known as arrowhead flower, water taro, wild taro, arrowhead flower, calla lily, and flower taro. It is a common ornamental flower cultivated all over the world. So how does it overwinter? When does it bloom?
1. How does calla lily overwinter?
Calla lily needs a room temperature of no less than 15 degrees to overwinter, and diluted compound fertilizer should be applied in advance before winter begins. After winter arrives, reduce the amount and frequency of watering, generally once every half month, and the leaves must not get wet. Finally, ensuring reasonable light is enough for it to overwinter safely.
2. When does calla lily bloom?
The natural flowering period of calla lily is from November to May or June of the following year, with the peak flowering period in March-April, and the entire flowering period lasts as long as 6-7 months. But if the growing conditions are suitable and care is proper, it can bloom all year round.
The flower language of calla lily is universal love, holy devotion, eternity, elegance, nobility, honor, hope, purity, pure friendship, elegant temperament, success, and pure and flawless love.
Among them, the white calla lily represents elegance and beauty, and its flower language is “unwavering loyalty, forever united”.
3. What should be noted when growing calla lily?
1. Low temperature and dryness
Calla lily likes warmth and moisture and is not cold-tolerant. In winter, the indoor temperature should generally not be lower than 10°C, otherwise flowering will be affected. During the growth and flowering period, pay attention to keeping the potting soil moist and often rinse the leaf surface with warm water to keep it fresh green.
2. Smoke and dust pollution
Calla lily requires fresh air for growth and flowering and is relatively sensitive to smoke. Stove coal smoke and cooking fumes will both cause poor growth of calla lily, leading to yellow leaves and fallen flowers.
Avoid insufficient light. Calla lily likes light during both the growth period and the flowering period; especially around the Spring Festival flowering season, if the light is insufficient, the flower buds that emerge will fail to open and fall.
3. Poor ventilation
In winter, when indoor ventilation is poor, scale insects often occur, accompanied by sooty mold. When there are not many scale insects, they can be brushed off with a soft brush. For sooty mold, wipe off the black soot powder with clean water; in severe cases, spray 1500 times thiophanate or carbendazim for control.
4. Improper fertilization
Rotted cake fertilizer water can be used as fertilizer, and during the peak growth season, a diluted liquid fertilizer mixed with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium can be applied once about every 10 days. When fertilizing, never pour the fertilizer water into the leaf sheaths, so as to avoid causing rot.
