How does the coconut palm disperse its seeds?

The coconut is a very typical tropical fruit, seen everywhere in Hainan. So do you know what the coconut palm relies on to disperse its seeds? Let's take a look!

1. What does the coconut palm rely on to disperse its seeds

The coconut palm mainly relies on water to disperse its seeds. After the coconut matures, if it falls into seawater, because the density of its fat is relatively low, the coconut floats on the surface of the water and is dispersed with the seawater.

2. How does the coconut palm carry out seed selection work

In production, the yield and quality of coconuts are improved by selecting mother trees and harvesting superior seeds.

(1) Selecting mother trees: choose coconut palms with high yield per plant, a spherical or hemispherical crown, more than 28-30 leaves, and 6-8 fruit clusters as seed-collection mother trees.

(2) Selecting fruit seeds: in the coconut maturity season, choose fully mature, medium-sized, nearly round fruits, that is, the “dense, heavy, ripe” seed selection method. “Dense” means the plant is relatively short, with many leaves and fruits distributed evenly; “heavy” means the fruit has a high specific gravity, thin skin and thick flesh, a high germination rate, and is easy to grow into strong seedlings; “ripe” means a mature fruit that makes a clear “sloshing water” sound when shaken. After the seed fruits are harvested, store them in a ventilated, shaded and dry place, and carry out germination promotion after 1 month.
