How to prune pothos? Master the right method for fuller, more luxuriant foliage
Pothos is a large evergreen climbing vine of the genus Epipremnum, native to the tropical rainforest regions of Indonesia and the Solomon Islands, and it often climbs on the trunks of other plants or on rocks to survive. Because of its good ornamental value and its ability to absorb benzene, trichloroethylene, formaldehyde and the like from the air, it was later introduced into our country as a potted ornamental plant. So when carrying out potted care of pothos, how should pruning be done?
1. Pruning methods for pothos
Pruning is generally carried out in spring. When the stems and vines have covered the moss pole set up in the pot and the tips extend about 20 cm beyond the moss pole, you can cut off 40 cm of the stem tips of 2-3 of the plants. After the new buds and new leaves sprout following the cutting back, then cut off the stem tips of the remaining plants. For potted plants whose whole plant or lower half has lost its leaves due to winter cold damage or other reasons, you can cut back half of the stems and vines by 1/2, and the other half of the stems and vines by 2/3 or 3/4, so that the cut points are staggered in height; in this way, the new leaves growing below the cut points can quickly cover the moss pole.
There are many, many varieties of pothos, and different varieties may differ in pruning, and there are also different pruning methods at different stages, but as a potted plant for home care, pruning with the above method is sufficient; pruning pothos over the long term is also quite troublesome. In addition, friends with leisure can also prune pothos to create unique pothos shapes, but then it must be pruned according to the owner's wishes to achieve a beautiful look.
2. The main value of pothos
As a tropical plant, pothos has very vigorous transpiration, and in addition pothos itself has a very strong ability to absorb toluene and other substances harmful to human health, which has earned pothos the fine name of green purifier. Pothos can convert formaldehyde into substances such as sugars or amino acids during metabolism, and can also break down and absorb the benzene emitted by copiers and printers. Generally speaking, for a newly bought house, as long as you ventilate more and place several pothos plants indoors, it can soon meet the standard for living in.
Pothos stays green all year round and has very tenacious vitality; even if it dries out, it can come back to life with just a little water, making it an excellent foliage plant. The flower language of pothos is “watching over happiness”; placing one or two pothos plants indoors and looking at the spreading vines easily makes people feel relaxed and cheerful.
That is all for pothos; when caring for pothos you must be very careful, and in addition try not to grow it in the bedroom, because pothos leaves and branches decay quickly and easily breed some bacteria, which is also something everyone needs to pay attention to.
