The lotus is a very beautiful flower, a touch of freshness in summer, and is deeply loved by everyone. The common way to grow lotus is by seed propagation. Its seeds have no dormancy period; once fully ripe, they can be harvested and sown at any time. Let us take a look below at what the key points of the method for planting lotus seeds are.

1. Choosing lotus seeds

Lotus seeds have an extremely long lifespan; even seeds several hundred years old can germinate if planted properly, which shows just how strong their germination ability is. Generally, in mid-July, when the seed coat of the lotus seed changes from green to yellow-brown, sowing can begin. But if sowing is to be done after the following year, the lotus seeds need to be fully mature. How do you judge maturity? That is, when the seed coat of the lotus seed becomes hard and black, it is mature and can be harvested.

After lotus seeds are harvested, they should be dried and then stored indoors in a ventilated, dry place. When selecting lotus seeds, try to choose plump, mature seeds, as these have a higher germination rate when planted.

2. The sowing time must be suitable

It is better to sow lotus seeds when the temperature is 20 degrees Celsius. In order to allow seed lotus to reach the yield of lotus seeds harvested in the same year, sowing is usually chosen for early to mid-April. For flower lotus, sowing can be chosen from April to July, and it can bloom in the same year. Of course, sowing from late July to early September is also possible, but if the temperature is relatively low afterward, flowering cannot occur on schedule.

3. Soaking seeds to promote germination

Lotus seeds are relatively hard, and soaking them to promote germination makes sprouting easier. The specific method is to use scissors to cut open the sunken end at the tail of the lotus seed so that the seed coat is exposed, but do not injure the embryo, otherwise it cannot be planted. Place the cut lotus seeds in a basin and soak them in clean water, changing the water once a day; generally the embryo will appear within a week. In summer, when the temperature is relatively high and the light is relatively strong, appropriate shading is needed, and the frequency of changing the water should be increased; generally they can sprout within two days.

4. Seedling care

Lotus seedling methods include pot seedling raising and seedbed seedling raising; which one to choose specifically depends on the actual situation.

For pot seedling raising, spread pond mud sparsely in the pot, using about two-thirds of the pot soil. For seedbed seedling raising, choose a seedbed with length, width and height of 100*100*25cm, put in pond mud, plant the seeds in rows one by one, and maintain a water level of about 3 cm.

5. Key points of transplanting

When the lotus seeds have three or four true leaves, they can be transplanted. Plant one seedling per pot; transplant whenever you move them, and transplanting with soil gives a higher survival rate. In the early stage, keep the water shallow, and gradually raise the water level according to the growth of the seedlings.

In summary, the key points of the method for planting lotus seeds are mainly the above five points, and I hope they can be of some help to you.
