When I was little, I often saw some green vegetables growing in the ground back in my hometown. Grandma said that was called potherb mustard, and after cooking it, it was very tasty. After growing up, every time I went to the supermarket to buy vegetables, I would see a green vegetable called snow vegetable, and it looked very similar to potherb mustard, so is potherb mustard the same as snow vegetable?

1. Is potherb mustard the same as snow vegetable

Yes. Snow vegetable has many aliases. In Jiangsu and Zhejiang it is called “xuelihong”, “jiutoujie”, and “shaocai”; in Hunan and Hubei it is called “paicai”. It is an important vegetable commonly cultivated in the Yangtze River basin of our country during the winter and spring seasons, eaten for its leaf stalks and leaf blades, and it has very high nutritional value. It is the tender stems and leaves of the cruciferous plant mustard. It is a variety of leaf mustard among mustard vegetables.

2. Planting time:

For spring cultivation, sow from late February to late April; for summer cultivation, sow from early July to late August; for autumn cultivation, sow from early September to early October. The sowing rate is 0.75-1 kg per mu in spring, 1.5-2 kg per mu for summer sowing, and 1-1.5 kg per mu for autumn sowing. Before sowing, mix the seeds evenly with 2-3 times their amount of dry fine soil, and mainly broadcast them, striving for evenness. After sowing, lightly tread over the seedbed surface with your feet so that the seeds make close contact with the soil, then water thoroughly. For spring and autumn sowing, use plastic film mulching; for summer sowing, use shade netting, to help the seedlings emerge evenly. After the seedlings emerge, remove the plastic film or shade netting, keep the seedbed surface moist, and promote growth.
