The green plum is a deciduous small tree, cultivated in many parts of China. The plum blossom has long been regarded as a symbol of defiance against tyranny, of resistance and of steadfast purity, and the ancients often grouped pine, plum and bamboo together as the “Three Friends of Winter”.

I. Introduction to the Green Plum

The green plum, also known as the green calyx plum, gets its name because its calyx is green, its flowers are white and its small branches are green. It belongs to the green calyx type of the true plum line, straight-branch plum class, in the plum blossom cultivar classification system, and is an outstanding member of the plum blossom cultivars. It prefers relatively high air humidity and has a certain drought tolerance. It is not strict about soil, but prefers a moist sandy loam rich in humus; when the soil is heavy clay and poorly drained, it is prone to root rot and death.

The common insect pests and diseases of plum blossoms occur relatively easily on the palace pink plum and the cinnabar plum, but occur less on the green calyx plum. In addition, because the green calyx plum grows vigorously, with thick new branches and plump leaf buds, the survival rate of bud grafting is far higher than that of other cultivars. However, the green calyx plum also has its shortcomings, namely poor frost resistance of the flower buds, so attention must be paid to protecting the buds from the cold when a cold wave arrives.

II. The Value of the Green Plum

Fresh green calyx plum was processed by microwave "fixing" followed by drying. With alcohol-soluble extractives, chlorogenic acid, hyperoside and isoquercitrin as evaluation indicators, the effect of the microwave drying method on the quality of the green calyx plum was investigated. Results: a microwave drying process was optimized; the chlorogenic acid content in the microwave-dried samples was higher than in the traditionally dried samples, with a significant difference.

The green plum is a common ornamental flower, and its ornamental value is very high.
