Schefflera is an evergreen shrub, so it is also often used as a landscaping plant. So what is the pruning method for Schefflera?

1. Growth habits of Schefflera

Schefflera is a plant of the Araliaceae family and the genus Schefflera, also called umbrella tree, Schefflera arboricola, etc. Its main distribution areas are Taiwan, China, Guangdong, Fujian and other places.

Schefflera prefers a warm, humid, semi-sunny growing environment. It likes moisture and fears dryness. When air humidity is high and soil moisture is sufficient, its stems and leaves grow luxuriantly. But too much water, causing waterlogging, will lead to root rot. If the potting soil lacks water or is alternately wet and dry for a long time, leaf drop will occur. Schefflera has a certain ability to adapt to temporary drought and dry air.

The soil for growing Schefflera should preferably be fertile, loose and well-drained sandy loam. For potting soil, a mixed soil of peat soil, leaf mold and coarse sand is better.

2. Pruning method for Schefflera

Schefflera readily sprouts leggy branches. Usually pay attention to shaping and pruning to promote the growth of side branches and maintain a good tree shape. For young plants, carry out thinning and light pruning, mainly for shaping.

When an old plant becomes too large, heavy pruning can be carried out together with repotting. Cut off most of the branches, and at the same time cut away part of the roots, then repot it so that new leaves sprout.

Schefflera is generally pruned around Qingming Festival. When the stem of the Schefflera grows to about 15cm, pinching can be carried out to prevent the Schefflera from becoming leggy. When pruning, you can prune at an angle, and the scissors should be disinfected before use. In addition, the dead branches and dead leaves of the Schefflera should also be pruned away, so that the plant can grow better.
