Dipladenia needs the surrounding temperature kept above 10 degrees to overwinter, and it needs sufficient light. In winter, watering should be controlled and fertilizing stopped, letting it pass the winter through dormancy. So how should it be cared for normally?

1. How is Dipladenia normally cared for?

1. Soil

Dipladenia likes abundant sunlight and prefers a warm, humid environment. It is not cold-tolerant and does not have high soil requirements; a fertile, loose, well-draining sandy soil is best. Ordinary garden soil can satisfy Dipladenia, but it is recommended to use a soil with excellent permeability that leans sandy. It can be prepared with garden soil, sand, and leaf mold in a 1:2:2 ratio.

2. Temperature

The optimal temperature for Dipladenia growth is between 20-30°C, and it is best not to exceed 35°C. When winter temperatures are too low, it is prone to frost damage, so in winter attention must be paid to maintaining the temperature, preferably not below 10°C. When the temperature is below 10°C, frost damage may occur.

3. Watering

The best growing condition for Dipladenia is slightly dry soil. Too much moisture will weaken root respiration and even cause rot. If the potting soil is too dry, it will be difficult to absorb nutrients from the soil. Normally, water about once every 3 days, but avoid watering only after it has completely dried out; Dipladenia needs a sufficient nutrient supply during the light growing season in spring and summer.

4. Fertilizing

During the growing period, a compound fertilizer can be applied 3-5 times as a top dressing. At other times, a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium mixed fertilizer can be applied once a month, and in other seasons a slow-release fertilizer can be applied to meet the growth needs.

5. Light

Dipladenia likes sufficient light. If the light is too little, only the vines will grow and no flowers will appear. Therefore, Dipladenia needs 4 hours of light every day, and it can be placed in a south-facing window position.

6. Management

Dipladenia has extremely strong growth capacity. Along with the growth of the branches, the root system gradually becomes stronger, so every spring it should be repotted and the soil changed once. In addition, heavy pruning is not needed; normally, yellow leaves, diseased branches, and branches that affect permeability from the outside can be properly pruned. Dipladenia is very prone to diseases in the hot summer, so we should focus on prevention, applying a fungicide and insecticide once every half month.
