Osmanthus trees are widely used in landscape construction. They have graceful shapes, simple and elegant flowers, and a rich fragrance, and can also be used to make flower tea. They naturally prefer warm, humid environments, so how does an osmanthus tree survive winter?

1. Potted osmanthus trees

In late autumn (generally after Frost's Descent and before the Start of Winter), simply move the pot indoors, or place it on a sunny balcony. Pay attention to ventilation to avoid pests and diseases. If it enters dormancy, keep the potting soil slightly moist, which will help it bloom the following year.

In northern regions, after moving potted osmanthus indoors in late October or early November, it should be placed in a spot with ample light (the indoor temperature should be kept at 3-5°C), and the relative humidity should be kept between 60% and 80%. In winter, indoor light conditions should be slightly better (especially before the buds begin to sprout in early spring, when even more sunlight is needed). The indoor temperature in winter should not be too high, and the humidity should not be too great either; otherwise, the osmanthus will sprout early indoors, which is not good for its growth after being moved outside. In early April of the following year (after Qingming), the potted osmanthus can be promptly moved outside. After moving it outside, first place it in a sheltered, sunny spot for 1 week so it can gradually adapt to the outdoor environmental conditions, then arrange it in different places as needed.

2. Field-planted osmanthus trees

Seedlings are more afraid of freezing than adult osmanthus trees. You can build a windbreak barrier or cover them with transparent plastic film. For adult osmanthus trees, you can tie straw and plastic film around the trunk for cold protection.

In the north, field-planted osmanthus can tolerate a minimum temperature of -5°C to -8°C. Beyond this limit, osmanthus will suffer varying degrees of cold damage. Therefore, when planting osmanthus in the open field in the north, choose a sunny, sheltered spot and add artificial winter protection measures so it can overwinter safely. After the Winter Solstice each year, you can artificially tie the trunk with straw rope, or wrap the trunk with other warming materials, which can prevent ordinary cold damage. Before the soil freezes, cultivate the soil around the root collar together with intertillage, and then you can also wrap the canopy of the osmanthus with light-transmitting plastic film. Be careful to leave ventilation holes so the osmanthus can safely pass through the severe cold winter.

In the southern regions of China, there is no need to carry out excessive cold protection measures for field-planted osmanthus trees in winter; simply doing good winter care and management is enough.
