The cutworm is a common underground pest during the seedling stage of various crops in our country, and its harmfulness is relatively great. The crops it damages include cotton, corn, sorghum, millet, wheat, potatoes and other tuber crops, beans, hemp, alfalfa, tobacco, sugar beet, rapeseed, cucurbits, many kinds of vegetables, as well as lawns. In addition, seedlings of medicinal plants, forage grass and forest nurseries are also often damaged. So, what pesticide should be used to control cutworms?

1. Spraying liquid pesticide

Use Dichongxiao at a dosage of 500 grams per mu, dilute with water and spray appropriately on the ground surface, then water; alternatively, use 2.5% trichlorfon powder at 1.5-2 kg per mu for dusting.

2. Broadcasting poisonous soil or poisonous sand

Use 0.5 kg of 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate, add an appropriate amount of water, and spray-mix with 125-175 kg of fine soil, or mix 1 part of 20% fenvalerate emulsifiable concentrate with 2000 parts of fine sand and broadcast, or use 2.5% trichlorfon powder, 1.5-2 kg per mu mixed with 10 kg of fine soil, and scatter it into the heart leaves of lawn grass.

3. Poison bait trapping and killing

Use 0.5 kg of 90% crystalline trichlorfon, add 3-4 kg of water, and spray it onto 50 kg of crushed, roasted and fragrant cottonseed cake or wheat bran, or use 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate at 50 grams per mu, mix with 5 kg of cottonseed cake (or chopped fresh grass) and broadcast. The poison bait or poisonous grass should be scattered near the root zone of lawn grass in the evening, in small piles at regular intervals, at 15-20 kg per mu.

4. Chemical root irrigation

When the larvae are relatively large, use 80% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate or 50% phoxim, at 0.2 kg per mu diluted with 400 kg of water for root irrigation, (safety interval 5-7 days).

To control the black cutworm, the key is to eliminate it before the 3rd-instar larvae stage, when the larvae have not yet spread to cause damage and have relatively low pesticide resistance. In order to carry out effective control, it is very necessary to do a good job in pest monitoring, forecasting and investigation.
