1. What pesticide should be used for root maggots in garlic chive fields?

Use chlorpyrifos 2000x solution and Admire 3000x solution for root drenching, drenching once every 7 days, for 3 consecutive times, and the control efficacy can reach more than 90%. After the root drenching is completed, eating garlic chives is prohibited within 40 days. This is also a good opportunity to fertilize the garlic chives to strengthen the seedlings and enhance their growth vigor and resistance.

2. Morphological characteristics of garlic chives

Roots: They are a fibrous root system of string-like roots, without a main root or lateral roots. They are mainly distributed in the 30 cm plow layer, are numerous, about 40 roots, and are divided into 3 types: absorbing roots, semi-storage roots, and storage roots. They grow from the base of the shortened stem; the shortened stem is a disc-like modified stem, with roots growing below and leaves growing above.

Stem: The stem is divided into vegetative stems and flower stems. The vegetative stem of one- and two-year-old plants is shortened and modified into a disc shape, also called the bulb disc. Due to tillering and root jumping, the shortened stem gradually extends toward the soil surface, elongating by an average of 1.0-2.0 cm per year, and a gourd-shaped rhizome forms below the bulb disc. The rhizome is an important organ for storing nutrients.

Leaves: The leaves are clustered on the shortened stem, flat and ribbon-like, and can be divided into broad-leaved and narrow-leaved types. The leaf surface has a waxy bloom, and the stomata are sunken into the cuticle.

Flowers: An umbel enclosed by a conical involucre, containing 20-30 small flowers. The small flowers are bisexual, with a white corolla, 6 tepals, and 6 stamens. The ovary is superior, and cross-pollination occurs.

Fruit and seeds: The fruit is a capsule, with a 3-loculed ovary, and each locule contains two ovules. Mature seeds are black, shield-shaped, with a 1000-grain weight of 4-6 g.

The leaves, flower stalks, and flowers of garlic chives are all eaten as vegetables; the seeds and other parts can be used as medicine and have effects such as tonifying the kidneys, strengthening the stomach, refreshing the mind, and stopping sweating and astringing. In traditional Chinese medicine, some people call garlic chives “intestinal cleansing grass”.
