The four-season azalea, also known as the Belgian azalea, is a variety of azalea. Its petals are narrow and long, its filaments are red, its anthers are golden yellow, and it blooms continuously throughout the four seasons. So how do you propagate the four-season azalea?

1. How to Propagate the Four-Season Azalea

It is mainly propagated by cuttings. In spring and summer, choose robust two-year-old branches, cut them to about 5 cm, and keep 3 to 5 leaves at the top. A substrate of sand and gravel mixed with perlite is suitable. Provide shade and spray water frequently. After cuttings are taken, they root in about 1 month, and after 3 months they can be potted.

2. How to Care for the Four-Season Azalea

The four-season azalea prefers a care environment that is well ventilated, cool, and has scattered light. In summer, avoid direct sunlight, and spray water on the leaves to keep them moist and lower the temperature. Its fibrous roots are fine, so keep the potting soil from drying out while avoiding waterlogging. When temperatures are high in summer, you can give an extra watering at noon. It has a long flowering period, so fertilization should follow “light fertilizer applied frequently, no fertilizer in high heat,” with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as the main type. In addition, ferrous sulfate and nitrogen nutrient fertilizer can be sprayed on the leaves to keep them green and robust. After the peak flowering period at the end of March, the plant shape should be corrected.

3. How to Place Potted Four-Season Azaleas

Large potted four-season azaleas, when in bloom, are colorful with flowers all over the tree, and can be placed at the entrance of hotels, shops, or government offices, appearing extremely noble, elegant, and magnificent. Their ornamental effect is superior to that of sago palms and similar plants.

Medium-sized four-season azaleas, when in bloom, are dazzlingly beautiful and can be placed on an indoor office desk or coffee table. If used to decorate a meeting room, they have an uplifting effect, as if entering a place where it is spring all year round.

Small four-season azaleas are generally not for ornamental display and should be cultivated together. It is best to grow them in plastic greenhouses, and after they grow into medium-sized plants they can be sold or displayed for viewing.

For home cultivation, it is recommended to use a mix of leaf mold, sandy loam, and river sand. If the growing soil is alkaline, it should be adjusted as soon as possible.
